An observation of interest....and wondering if anyone has any information on
what is standard or currently available...
I have a Sanyo 8100, in blue. The keypad is completely illuminated with
backlight when I flip open the phone and dial and therefore very easy to see
in low level light.
Others that I have seen in silver have a different keypad. The keys
themselves are silver, and only the numbers on the keys are actually
backlit. To the people that I know with these phones, they feel that it is
much more difficult to see the keypad in low light.
I was one of the first people to have an 8100, so I am wondering if Sanyo
made this change to the phone since I got mine, or whether it has something
to do with battery life. I have tested this out with others, and there
doesn't appear to be any significant loss of battery time between the
different phones.
Has anyone else noticed or come across this?
Thanks in advance to all who respond....

Neither. The change in the keypad design is dependent only on the phone
color. I had both a silver and blue 8100 and noticed the same thing.
The keypad was simply designed differently, along with the rest of the
color scheme.
The newer Sanyo phones have an even better keypad design, IMO. the
RL2500 and VM4500 have a blue LED backlight, and the VM4500 uses
backlighting scheme similar to the old Dual Band StarTAC (which was an
excellent backlight design, IMO).

I was just shopping for a new phone and did not get the 8100 because
the silver model was so poorly backlit (and b/c of problems people had
with the earpiece having a narrow sweet spot). I did not see any blue
ones on display anywhere and assumed they were no better, but
apparently they are much better if yours is bright! (IAC I'm happy
with my VM4500. It lights up the room practically.)

Odd, I have a Silver 8100 and find the lit numbers are extremely
bright. Even in low-mid level lights, especially in total darkness.
I do hate that there's not a quick way to dim the display.

My wife's lavender/pearl 8100 has keys whose full shape lights up.

I use the screen on my silver 8100 as a flashlight all the time.

Re: 8100 Keypad backlight
Just to clarify to those who have responded thus far, I wan not talking
about the display, only the keypad. So it appears from the responses that
the blue and pearl phones have a different keypad than the silver...Is there
anyone out there with a silver phone that has a fully lighted keypad, and if
so, from where did you get your phone?
Thanks

As I wrote, my numbers (not the whole key) is lit and bright enough
that I don't have problems seeing them.
