    Hello -

I received an SMS notification today advising me to download this fox for my
Treo 600. Does anyone know whether this is valid?

    This is the link: http://www.sprintpcs.com/treo600/

It appears valid but I'd like to confirm.. I don't want to download some
    virus...

    Thanks..

It's valid. As we started bringing SMS online in some=20
areas, and shortmails started routing direct to Treo 600's,=20
quite a few of them would reboot everytime a message=20
arrived. We worked with Handspring to issue this update,=20
and formatted the notification to make sure it wasn't part=20
    of the problem.

Download from there using the PC to which you hotsynch the=20
Treo. Run the updater. It'll tell you when to hotsynch. =20
After that, this problem should not happen.

What about those of us who use a Mac?

I was given a step-by-step method to update my Treo600 using a windows
    machine but it failed.

When is a Macintosh updater going to be available?

or how about "Why do we need to run an updater to upgrade apps at all?"
as i understand it, the upgrade adds a Sprint SMS client, upgrades Blazer
(the web browser) to fix a number of glitches, and performs a flash ROM
upgrade to enable SMS. the flash upgrade also has something to do with
fixing an infrequently occurring "provisioning" problem (whatever that
    means in Sprint jargon).

but i have nothing that indicates i have a provisioning problem
(everything works). i already have an SMS client (Treo600SMS
from PDA Apps). and all i'd like is the blazer upgrade.

but to get it, i have to run the upgrade process which backs up
your current treo memory image, erases the memory image, upgrades
the ROM, and then restores the image from the backup.

the number of reports of upgrade failure on www.treocentral.com
    is sobering.

It's not upgrading anything. It's patching a found flaw in a way that's=20
even faster than issuing a network upgrade.

    Dear Mark,

I don't mind doing these upgrades, I've been doing them for 5 years on
my Palms. No Problems. BUT it IS a problem when they don't release Mac
updateers. A BIG one for me.

I can NOT use SMS at all. I've tried Treo600SMS) and it doesn't work for
    me either.

I just want a working Mac updater, a SMS program that works and absolute
    power.

    Cheers,

    Josh

it's not about upgrading anything? what does "fix problems with blazer
and cookies" (on the sprint web site) mean to you? what flaw does
it patch? i realize from reading your posts that you tend to be both
helpful and detailed, but the silence about this update is driving
    me nuts.

my treo isn't a "black box" that sprint administers.
it's a $400 investment in hardware and software made by me.
i want to know the details. i need to know the details.

the only way to offset the problems caused by the still relativley
crude environment offered by palm's OS (no virtual memory
protection) is to go "open kimono" with the details. that
    way people can help themselves.

all the more reason to unbundle it or give a manual procedure.

the discussion board at treocentral.com has sit files for Mac users and
instructions. worked fine for me. no longer have the direct link so
    you'll have to look.
