I bought this phone today and it rocks. I couldn't be happier. I went from
a SCP-4900 to this one. I'll miss the 4.5 hour talk time on the 4900 but
for the features I can't go wrong with this one. I decided to use it as a
modem so I could surf the net and it went pretty quick as well.
dslreports.com showed the speed at 85K down and 35k up.

Re: Sanyo SCP-5500 / VM4500
If you don't use and subscribe to ReadyLink, go to Settings, ReadyLink,
Disable. Then the phone isn't frequently reporting its status for ReadyLink to
the SprintPCS Network, and battery life becomes on a par with other phones.

You can get a charging data cable fro your phone @
http://gomadic.com/sa49tolawiin.html
Cost is $15, but great company to deal with, fast shipping --- and they
honor their lifetime warrantee --- no questions asked.

Re: Sanyo SCP-5500 / VM4500
I just bought one last night, and haven't been productive sense (Too
much time playing with it).
But, I have one question...what the heck is the little icon that looks like
a crosshair that appears both on the main LCD and on the external LCD? I
can't find anything out about this.
Thanks,
Doug

But don't you have to subscribe to SpringPCS data service at something
like ~$40 for about 20Megs of data transaction. That's what I was told
anyways.

Re: Sanyo SCP-5500 / VM4500
Using the phone as a modem is not allowed. The data service plans
are only for PCS Connection Cards for laptops and pdas.

Re: Sanyo SCP-5500 / VM4500
Your characterization that it "is not allowed" is incorrect.
It is against Sprint's written rules, but in fact they tacitly enable such
activity and permit moderate usage of the phone as a tethered modem
without any additional charges.

SPCS has a backdoor on Vision, where we can tether our phones to our laptops
to access the web. As long as it's not done to replace your regular ISP, or
to do large downloads, it hasn't been a problem for any of us. I can't speak
for everyone else, but for yours truly, when I'm on the road, I hook up for
15 to 30 minutes to check email and casual surfing ...

*giggle*
When I read that I thought to myself, "that sounds just like Jerome
wagging his finger." *Then* I looked and saw who posted it.
Jerome, all I can say is I use Vision with my laptop. It works. My
service has never been cancelled. Nobody's ever called or written me
from Sprint to whack me across the wrist.

Don't tell Jerome, he's the newsgroup's Vision Police.
I use Vision the same way you do. I rather doubt SprintPCS will yank
this capability, especially with Verizon now rolling out EV-DO.
