Re: Area Code 500
FWIW, the telecommunications database at http://www.telcodata.us/ doesn't
show that there is an area code 500.

Some Verizon landline areas have the 1-500 numbers for a sort of toll free
service for customers. If a customer is in the specified verizon service
area, they can dial the 500 number and connect for free instead of dealing
with long distance charges. Some dial up ISPs use this a lot in WV. Most of
WV is serviced by Verizon landline and it makes it easy for the ISP to only
need one POP and be able to serve a large geographical area without LD
charges. I think it has to do with how verizon handles the PRIs that they
can offer this without charging LD.

Area Code 500 was supposed to have been used for "follow-me" phone numbers
that were not geography-dependent, but the idea never took off.
Funny thing is, now there are a bunch of companies providing similar services.
500 was supposed to be like a personal 800 number (although not tollfree,
just portable).
