[cross posted in Sprint and Cingular NGs]
I posted several months about loosing 30% of my Sprint coverage area in
North Texas and may have to consider switching over to Cingular.
Apparently Sprint lost its analog roaming partnership in that area as
there is NO coverage indicated on the map now and driving around in the
area confirms the extent of coverage loss - something like 60 miles
across and 20 miles wide. So looking at Cingular and dump Sprint, sans
the ETF.
The Motorola V557 appears to fit my needs - it had EDGE capacity for
tethered laptop access using the $24/month plan for unlimited data added
to your voice plan, camera (a VERY useful function, its not just a toy),
speakerphone, and Bluetooth (once you use a wireless earpiece, you never
go back to the wires).
Am I going to run into any unanticipated unknown issues here?

Umm...a newer plan that isn't on the websites yet that won't let me do
unlimited tethered access? Replacement phone plan no longer covers dog
chewing up the phone.
Pic of my partner's Blackberry after dog got hold of it.

This is what I emailed to Sprint:
The area with no coverage is 60 miles across and 20 miles wide. From
Olney, TX (76374) and Throckmorton (76483) to the west, through Graham,
TX (76450) and over to 15 miles east of Jacksboro (76458).
This shows the mapped out area. White is the no coverage and the yellow
outline is where I use my phone.

I used to have solid analog coverage in that area when I renewed my plan
In January, but noticed no coverage a few months ago and pretty much
determined the scope of the are since then.
Sprint's response.........
An exact date the launch of Sprint services in this area cannot be
obtained. This is because Sprint thoroughly tests the competence of
coverage and network strength before launching the services in a new
area, and this process is time-consuming.
When we will launch services in this area, numerous promotional offers
To improve our network performance and coverage, we are enhancing the
network this year by taking the following steps:
1. Committing to a $2.1 billion capital-spending program, which
encompasses network expansion, improved network capacity and
performance;
2. Signing up to add 1,700 new cell sites on air;
3. Embarking on a multi-year campaign to acquire and build additional
cell sites; and
4. Improving in-home, in-office and public venue coverage.

Re: Moving from Sprint to Cingular
Sprint should eat the ETF since they dropped coverage in an area where you
need coverage.

Re: Moving from Sprint to Cingular
this doesn't affect me-i live further east.
but it sounds like Sprint gave you the usual BS.
are you not able to roam on another carrier's cell site? i thought that is
what roaming was for.

Re: Moving from Sprint to Cingular
It sounds like there was no loss of Sprint PCS coverage. Sprint PCS is
all digital, no analog. Roaming has never been and not likely to ever
be stable.

Re: Moving from Sprint to Cingular
Looks like a fair sized portion of that triangle has no coverage at all.

No...never said there was a loss of Sprint PCS network coverage.
Its obvious they lost a roaming agreement. Its obvious it was analog
agreement (I always dropped into analog roming).
The fact that they showed it on their maps at one time and I based my
renewal on their maps, one could sucessfully argue it was Sprint
coverage (even though we all know it was a partnership).

Re: Moving from Sprint to Cingular
Nevertheless, Sprint is still responsible for their maps and the service
that are represented by the maps regardless of whether the coverage is
native or roaming.

Re: Moving from Sprint to Cingular
You said "I posted several months about loosing 30% of my Sprint
coverage area in North Texas". Their roaming agreements and maps
change, and not in schedule everyone's Advantage Agreement renewal
dates. How can one successfully argue when you admit "we all know it"
is wrong?

I'm not sure what your pointing out, but I'll try my best to answer.

True, there might be some latency in updating there maps. But the maps
were still accurate for like six months after I renewed.
> How can one successfully argue when you admit "we all know it"

The "successfully argue" was referring to, and I'll quote Mij Adyaw on
this, "Nevertheless, Sprint is still responsible for their maps and the
service that are represented by the maps regardless of whether the
coverage is native or roaming."
The "we all know" is referring to those of us that understand native
network coverage versus off-network coverage provided by a roaming
agreement with another carrier.

You might want to wait a bit!!!
The area you describe is covered by the (largest) Sprint PCS affiliate,
Alamosa PCS (who purchased AirGate PCS):
http://www.airgatepcsa.com/footprint_map_2.html
Like many SPCS affiliates, Alamosa PCS wasn't happy about the
Sprint/Nextel merger. Many of the affiliates brought lawsuits against
Sprint Nextel. Most ended up with Sprint Nextel buying the affiliate, or
an out-of-court settlement. But the Alamosa PCS lawsuit was still
pending--and is why I suspect you suddenly lost coverage.
HOWEVER, just today Sprint Nextel have announced they are indeed buying
Alamosa PCS:
http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansas...s/13225074.htm
============================
Sprint Nextel Corp. today said it will buy its largest affiliate carrier
in a deal worth about $4.3 billion.
Alamosa Holdings Inc., which is based in Lubbock, Texas, will bring
Sprint about 1.48 million direct subscribers.
The transaction will require approvals from Alamosa shareholders and
regulators. Sprint executives said they expect to close the deal in the
first quarter of 2006.
"As the largest PCS affiliate, we appreciate their efforts over the
years to grow Sprint's business and we look forward to continuing a
strong relationship with their customers," Gary Forsee, Sprint's
president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. "This
transaction will significantly expand our direct customer base and
territory, and will provide additional value for our shareholders."
Alamosa had filed a lawsuit against Sprint earlier this year, raising
objections to how it would be treated following Sprint's merger with
Nextel Communications Inc.
As part of the transaction announced today, both companies immediately
will seek to put the litigation on hold. A final resolution would take
effect when the acquisition is completed...
============================
So you might find things will improve with Sprint Nextel as they and
Alamosa PCS get their act together.
Oh yea, what happens when you force the phone into analog roam and
attempt to make a call?
>
> Am I going to run into any unanticipated unknown issues here?
Yea, lack of analog roam completely. (Not a big deal to me, but for some
it might be.)
