You can easily go to Sprint, upgrade your phone and keep the same plan, the
problem is that when you upgrade, typically you have to renew your timed
obligation to Sprint for one or two years.

One way around this is to locate the phone on eBay and purchase it there.
Then you can simply move to the new phone without having to do an upgrade
    and extend.

If you upgrade to an EV-DO phone, and have an old plan--particularly one
with grandfathered Vision--you probably won't get Sprint to keep you on
the same plan. Non-EV-DO phones are of course a different story.

This is only if one gets a new-phone rebate. In that case Sprint is
subsidizing the handset. They would like to ensure they receive that
money back--like most other carriers. Ergo, the contract extension. But
you are free to buy the phone at "full" price from Sprint or any
retailer and not extend your contract by one single day.

If it's a "new" phone you'll still have your rebate clock reset. (In
many cases, even by activating a new-for-you used phone.)

This assumes you are willing to take a chance on a cellphone via Ebay.
Many have had great results. Others have not been as fortunate.

It should be mentioned that, if the new phone has not been activated
with Sprint before, it will reset your rebate clock.

You are of course correct. But please don't bother Mr. Callery with such
"details," as he prefers vague generalities instead. ;-)

Also, some people have had their clocks reset with phones that had been
activated before on SPCS (including me). I believe it happened to Paul
Miner as well, and he attributed it to "a case of not applying a policy
    uniformly." I tend to agree.

I'm not sure CSRs can even "reset" the clock, or know how to. When they
did it to me, all they (claimed) they could do was notate my account
that my rebate period is *really* such-and-such date. YMMV, as I know
others who swap phones all the time without having the rebate clock
    reset.

Uh, Mij, what part of "PROBABLY won't get Sprint to keep you on the same
plan" weren't you able to follow? [emphasis added]

Yes, there are people who have jumped through hoops to keep their old
Vision plans. But there are far more people who have lost it (you'd be
foolish to think everyone researches sprintusers.com when they don't
know this will even happen). You will also see people who have had their
plan changed without their knowledge, even though they were initially
told it wouldn't. And once it is lost, it is gone, unless you jump
through even more hoops (even then, it's usually not quite the same
    promo).

If you have a grandfathered Vision plan, or any plan that has a promo
code that is no longer allowed (if changed), once the Sprint rep
modifies that field it's all over. The field is validated against
current promo codes and will not allow the old code back in. This has
been verified (personally) by Sprint CSRs.

They are also adding more roadblocks to disallow circumventing the
addition of true EV-DO plans without removing the old promo codes (I
believe they already present a pop-up warning during EV-DO activations
about this subject). Rumor has it this will get more-and-more strict (if
    it isn't already).

Time will tell if they force everyone onto it. Had EV-DO been overlaid
everywhere 1x exists, you can bet they would close this loophole pronto
(try upgrading a non-Vision phone to a Vision phone while keeping your
    "Wireless Web" option).

So what I wrote, as worded, is indeed *true*. In fact, I'll even provide
you with a post right from sprintusers.com, posted just today:
    =================================
Old school plans will not mesh with EVDO

I will try to describe the following situation as quickly as possble:
I've been a Sprint Customer for a number of years now. I currently have
2000 anytime minutes; a second line for wifey (no charge); Unlimited
Text messaging for both phones; Night and Weekends at 7 p.m.; PCS Vision
with Picture Pack (no charge); and the usual standard features. With my
discounts and and after taxes, I pay approx. $100.00 per month.

Now that you know that, here comes the good (really bad) part. I go into
the Sprint Store the other day to upgrade my phones from the Sanyo
pm-8200 to the Blade. I only wanted this phone primarily for the
Bluetooth. The EVDO didn't matter either way. So, I buy the phones,
charge 'em, and I'm ready to roll. Just to be on the safe side, I call
customer service (I'm a cynic at heart) to verify my plan. The rep
advised that I no longer had Unlimited Text Messaging (which is $15.00
under EVDO for both phones) and Power Vision is extra as well ($20.00
for both phones) Anyway, I tell her that I could care less about EVDO
and I want my old plan back. She says Okay. And it is done.

Later that day, I call CS again because I just had a bad feeling about
the whole thing especially after reading about some of the horror
stories on this forum. The CS told me that my plan had not been changed
back to the way I wanted it, and that there was nothing that they could
do. I took those Blades back to the Store and got my great plan back. If
I had known or was even told about all of the changes that were being
made to my account when I bought those Blades, I would have left them in
the store. What a waste of time. From what I understand, the Treo 700
(with EVDO) should be out around the first of the year. When that
happens, the price should drop on the 650 and I will get one of those
for the Bluetooth. Morales of the story "Research as much as you can,
and when you think you have, that's not even enough" and "Incompetence
is ruining the fabric of society" -me
    =================================

In this guy's case they were able to get him back to where he was with
Vision (after he returned the phones). But if his Vision promo code is
no longer supported (and his may be), they accomplished it through some
other means. (His wasn't a spectacular deal--I have a better deal and
    have three phones.)

That of course didn't stop the bashing on SUF about not "researching
enough." Gee, why would you have to research if this wasn't an issue,
    Mij?

I had seen the posts on sprintusers and coupled with the sprint store
salesperson's assurance that the grandfathered unlimited Vision of my
Free and Clear 3500 minute plan would apply to my new EVDO Sanyo MM-9000
I proceeded to experiment with my new phone and its Vision and
PowerVision capabilities (none of the individually chargeable items).
In just about a week I racked up nearly 200 bucks in per kilobyte Vision
usage charges. I made a call to Sprint and got the charges removed and
added a basic PowerVision plan after being educated that my previous
Vison service code was incompatible with my new phone. I revisited the
sprint store where the saleperson who originally told me my old vision
plan code would apply confirmed that my new phone needed a new vision
plan. At least in my case I was able to keep my minutes plan but some of
    the features were a problem.

If you do not use the EVDO phone any differently than your old phone, how do
you rack up a $200 charge? You must be watching video or downloading music?

Since the Vision feature for my previous plan was invalid all vision
access from my phone was charged at the $.01 per kilobyte rate. It
doesn't take much to rack up big charges. I wasn't downloading
anything. By my math 200 bucks is about 20MB of total vision access over
the course of a week. You don't have to be downloading music or
    streaming video to do that.

In following up with the other replies, yes ... it is possible, depending on
what your current plan is and a bunch of other variables. You didn't mention
what plan you are on, how much you are spending, nor whether you have Vision
    on your account now.

Nor do you mention whether you are buying a new phone to be activated for
the first time, or whether you will be going with a previously used phone.
If you provide some additional details, a more definitive answer can be
provided by yours truly, or any of the other old timers in this newsgroup.

I currently pay 25.00 for 500 anytime minutes using an old qualcomm
    QPC 2035.
    Don't have Vision.
I will buy a new phone to be activated probably at Sprint. Would pick
up a phone at ?? if that makes more sense. Don't want video, web
access or cameras. Just want to get a more current smaller phone.

    Thanks for your help ...

The answer to your question is YES ... you can keep your plan, if you pay
full price for your new phone and ask for an ESN change on your account. You
may be eligible for the phone rebate SPCS offers, however, you would need to
change to a plan that costs a minimum of $35/mo, and with that you would get
    less minutes.

All depends on your needs and usage of minutes, and if you did decide to go
with the 2 year $150 rebate, you could get a free phone. If you breakout the
extra $10/mo. you would be paying for a new monthly plan, the savings equal
out @ 15 months worth of service. You could get a $75 1 year rebate, to
where SPCS's least expensive phone ($150), the rebate would equal out on the
extra monthly plan expense by 7.5 months.

Lots of options, depending if you want to reduce the cost of a new phone.
