tried to use my cell yesterday but got a message that my service was cut off
for not paying bill.(was paid up to date) when checked on line found I was
paid, next bill due in jan. found the next bill was over 600.00.
traced problem to my sons sanyo vi2300, he used web to check football
scores, left phone on but web didn't shut off. over 5000kbs used. fought
with their customer service, finally had 400.00 taken off, i also deleted
the web from both our sons phones.
had similiar troublewith web not shutting down on our samsung 740s.
any one else has same problem?

Since Vision was introduced 2.5 years ago, this is the FIRST post that I've
seen with regards to Vision not shutting down after 1 to 2 minutes of
inactivity. Unless there is something screwed up in the phone's firmware,
methinks that your kids were actively surfing on the web.

If you still believe your kids, and have a SPCS store locally, I'd recommend
you go to the store, talk to the technician, ask him about the problem you
experienced and ask him to test the phone out.

He was probably looking at a sport's screen that auto-updates every x
number of seconds. IIRC, I've watched such scores without my phone
turning off (till I exited the browser or turned off the phone). Some of
the sports sites can auto-update play-by-play. I would imagine the phone
just thought it was still in use.

BTW: He could also have purchased one of the add-on apps that can do
better play-by-play action. But the one I tried, IIRC, popped up a
message asking if I wanted to stay connected every 30 minutes or so.

How can they shut off your service for not paying a bill that hasn't come
    due?

If someone goes over their credit-limit when using a CC, even before the
bill is due, can the CC not decline purchases? (Generally.)

Now I don't know if this is a case of an account spending limit. It
could be a safeguard to prevent even more charges from occurring (i.e.,
Sprint figured something was wrong and shut him down). This, ironically,
can also happen when unusual activity occurs with a CC (I had it happen
on a long bike trip, but a simple call letting them know the card wasn't
    stolen cleared that up).

Did he just get the phone? I went and updated my old phone to a Sanyo
VI2300, and when I checked my account on line, discovered that I had been
automatically signed up for a $10 a month package called "Sprint PCS Vision
Accessory Pack". I don't even keep Vision enabled, I just want the phone
for phone services, not web. If I hadn't checked on line, I would not have
known about this until I got the bill. Just saying, maybe he ended up with
an add-on pack that he didn't know about.

BTW: Something isn't quite right here. According to Sprint's Website, if
you don't have Vision--and use it--you will be charged $.02 per kilobyte
("Unless a Sprint PCS Vision Pack is selected, customers with a Sprint
PCS Vision Phone will be charged 2¢ per kilobyte for Sprint PCS Vision
    usage.).

Even assuming the $400 was a credit for all for data charges, that works
out to 20,000 kB (kiloBYTES) or 160,000 kb (far more than 5,000 kb). Now
if the phone was pulling data at a non-stop rate of 100 kbps, that would
only take about half an hour.

But I don't know ANY football screen that grabs that much bandwidth--not
even remotely close. That means your son either left that phone on for
many hours, or was running a streaming type of app that consumed much
more bandwidth than a simple mobile Web page--that updates a few kb
    every 15 seconds or so.

And this is assuming the data cost only $400. If it was closer to $600 I
think your son needs to clarify exactly what he did: the phone's battery
would die before it would download that much data from a simple mobile
    Web page--even if it auto-updates.

Actually, it's the other away around. By paying that $10 per month you
can use Vision on the phone as much you like--unlimited. But if you take
that pack off, and use the phone's browser anyway, you'll be charged
$0.02 per kilobyte for data usage. For someone who might use the browser
once every month or so, the data charges might indeed be less than $10
(especially if you *never* use it <g>). But if you start racking up data
usage without having the Vision pack you can be in for a little--or in
    this case big--surprise.

This is what appears to have happened to the OP. Had he had a Vision
pack on his son's phone the only charge would have been for the cost of
the pack itself--no additional data charges. Assuming they only credited
$400 for $600 worth of data, that's still a charge of $200--more than
the Vision pack would have cost for an entire year. YMMV.

I would recommend that he goes to settings & disable vision when not in use.
There will be activity even while the indicator shows dormant.

Absolutely agree with you Mike on the battery power, as the battery would
have long crapped out before that one session would use that much data on
    line.

A couple of weeks ago, I left my phone connected overnight to one of
those auto update football score sites. Then, a few days later, I
left my phone connected overnight to a WAP site that I am developing
for some equipment that my company makes. This page was only
updating a single data point every 10 seconds, but nonetheless, I was
connected overnight. Just getting too forgetful or too much in a
    hurry...

Is there anywhere on the Sprint website that one can check data usage?
I can't seem to find it if there is. I was curious to see if I'll be
getting any nasty charges for data use. I haven't heard anything from
    Sprint so far.
