I have a samsung I500 which uses PALM software. Frankly I love palm. I
keep the desktop software on my home computer and my company laptop. It
seems like everything is going microsoft though. Does windows mobile
only sync with Outlook? I wouldnt like this at all. Theres pleny of
stuff in my outlook calender that I wouldnt want to clutter up my pda.
Same goes for the address book. Does windows make some sort of
    standalone desktop software like palm?

As far as I know Windows Mobile syncs with Outlook only. I also have a
Samsung i500 and I like the Palm interface and OS on the desktop and the
device itself so I plan on moving to a Treo 650 and use the i500 as a backup
phone in case the Treo needs to be sent in for repair. You might want to
consider the same since it seems to me you like the Palm platform and are
familiar with it. One of the PC magazines recently did a camparison between
Palm OS and Windows Mobile and it said Windows was better but I strongly
disagree with their assessment. One of their reasons is that Palm OS hasn't
changed much since it started over 10 years ago but I see that as a strong
point. If it ain't broke then don't fix it. Palm has proven to be good at
what PDAs were supposed to be good at... a personal digital assistant.
Personally I don't need all the bells and whistles that Windows Mobile
offers such as video and music. If I want to watch movies I'll bring along
my portable DVD player and if I want to listen to music I have my RIo Carbon
Pearl for that. I don't even need or want the camera that comes on the Treo
650 and if I do upgrade I'll be trying to get one without a camera since I
have a Minolta Z6 (six megapixel) digital camera that I'm sure would blow
any images the Treo would take.

Thanks for the reply, I tend to agree I think the palms simplicity is
    its greatest asset.
