Anyone heard when either the new Blackberry 71xx or 87xx will be
supported on the Sprint PCS network (not the Nextel)?

Mike

Research In Motion, Ltd. has been fighting an intellectual-property case in
court, and they COULD get shut down if they are found to be infringing the
plaintiff's patents and can't come to some resolution. Whether or not that
happens remains to be seen, but it's definitely possible.

Re: New Blackberry's
You are slightly misinformed.
NTP and RIM will meet in court on Fed 24th. At that time NTP will ask a
judge to shut RIM down. IF that happens, there will be at least a 30 day
period between then and the shutdown. If the DOJ has their way, there will
be at least a 90 day wait.
NTP needs to push for this to happen soon as their patents are being
rejected, and if they don't get some cash from RIM soon, they will never get
anything but a bunch of lawyer bills.
NTP's only leverage at this point is if they can force an injunction BEFORE
the patent office is done with their review.
There are a number of things that could happen here.
A) This injunction could be granted.
In that case, RIM would need to produce the "Work around" they have
designed. The belief here is that RIM doesn't want to do this since it would
mean every single hand held and every BES would need a software upgrade.
That's a huge issue.
Other options would include that RIM would finally pay up something, or
perhaps money may have to be put in to an escrow until all the patents have
been reviewed, approved, or rejected.
B) The injunction could be postponed until the patents have finished being
reviewed. In that case, it could be years before anything happens.
C) The Justice Department could step in and stop this whole thing.
The bottom line is that RIM will never be "shut down". They have a number of
options and the funny thing is that no matter what happens, 5 years from now
they will have come out ahead in this thing.
They very very worst case scenario is that they are temporarily offline
until the new system is out.

Nothing has been announced yet, but it's entirely Sprint's decision at
this point. The 7130 is already out and it's a CDMA model, so a 7100
form factor could show up on Sprint's CDMA side anytime they chose to.
Likewise, it's probably only a matter of time before a CDMA version of
the 87xx becomes available.
So in a nutshell: no, there's no official word of any such release. But
if Sprint plans on keeping their Blackberry line current, they'll
eventually carry one or both.
