A900 and Powervision

Here's a question to ask the group without first having to ask a CS Rep.
First of all, I have the Samsung A620 (VGA 1000) with Sprint. Got it
back in December of 2004 when I signed up. Hey, that's the one they
gave me!

I have the PCS Fair & Flexible plan with 300 anytime minutes, the PCS
Vision Pictures Pack, nationwide long distance, unlimited night &
weekends included, caller ID & call waiting, 3-way calling, & 100 web
messages/month, (people on my MSN and ICQ list can text me) all for
$58.07 with all taxes included. Now that you have an idea of what I
have on my phone, here's the question.

I'm seriously considering the A900 to replace my A620. My 2 year
contract is not up until December of this year, but I can still get $75
off the A900 if I renew the contract for a couple of years. The PROBLEM
is that I've read in other posts that if I get a powervision phone, most
likely I'll have to get the powervision plan. I want to keep all the
other services I have now, but powervision is not available in this
little town I live in. The vision pack works just fine here, but by
looking at the coverage maps, powervision doesn't reach here. Radio
Shack (the authorized dealer in this area) is selling powervision
phones. I asked them why they were selling those phones if the service
is not available in this area. They laughed and told me I was mis-
informed. I told them to call CS just to see for themselves. Well,
what-do-you-know??? Powervision is NOT available in this area! I just
bit my lip to keep from saying TOLD YOU SO!

At any rate, do you think I can keep the regular PCS Vision pack if
powervision isn't available here and still pay the same price I'm paying
now if I upgrade to the A900? I know the answer may be obvious, but I'd
at least like to hear your opinions and facts about it.

This has been my worst dream no one not even Sprint seems sure about
this. The only answer I can give you is you must by a power vision plan .
If it is not available in your area you will have regular vision. I have
done everything in my power to change that but I have given up.

No, you cannot keep your old vision plan on a powervision phone, the
powervision phones require certain codes to be provisioned when activating,
and the old vision codes must be replaced. That said, the power vision
phones will work on the sprint network at the older, slower speeds if
powervision is not available where you live, and you can take a lesser
powervision package priced comparable to your old vision service.

I should certainly hope so, considering EV-DO isn't available in approx.
75% or more of the areas Sprint has CDMA 1x coverage in. And if you do
live in a covered area, it won't take too long to drive out of it.

Not if you were using Picture Mail (let alone those of with
grandfathered Vision plans that include unlimited text messages).
Picture Mail's not included in the $15 per-month Power Vision plan--you
need the $20 plan.

Five dollars might not seem like a lot, but as evidenced here, it's
enough to push some people away from Power Vision--or Vision altogether.
Methinks there's a certain price-point where an average user is just
going to say, "enough." Ten dollars wasn't too bad--fifteen not much
worse. But I'm not so sure about twenty... especially when there is
little-to-nothing to gain (unless you happen to travel to an EV-DO area
a lot).

Sprint has become quite good at the "nickel and diming" game in the past few
years, with all their $5 add-ons. There's nothing inherently wrong with that,
but I can certainly identify with people who feel it's not the kind of
business deal they'd like to participate in.

That's not entirely true.

You could keep the vision plan, and it would work just fine, it's wether or
not the rep forces you to keep it, or catches that it's there in the first
place.

"Proof"

One of my 6 lines on my family plan was a Sanyo vm4500. Had the $5
add-a-phone vision on it... I went to Fry's Electronics, bought the A900
outright, walked out the door, charged the battery, called spring from the
a900 and said I'd like to do an ESN swap... they put the new ESN in place of
my Sanyo vm4500, and I hung up, waited 2 minutes, and the phone and VISION
worked just fine. Then I started to get "greedy"... I wanted to try out
EVDO since I live in EVDO land :-)... I called up to have the unlimited
$40/month PAM plan added.. and that's when the rep caught that I had a
standard vision plan on there and said that he had to change it to a power
vision plan. I don't doubt he had the "upgrade" my vision plan to get the
EVDO PAM to work, but the fact that vision worked just fine for 2 weeks
prooves that you don't NEED a PowerVision plan for internet to work.. just
for EVDO speeds to work :-D

If you call them up, explain the situation, and ask nicely, if you get ahold
of someone who actually knows what they're doing and knows that 'yes it will
work' then you might be able to get away with it. Or if you do what I
did... buy phone outright, and ESN Swap it... you may end up with what
you're wanting.

I tried everything one person said I could have regular vision. Then I
lost them and when I called back nope. So on the A900 I got rid of all
vision and went to my Sanyo 8300 and got regular vision.
