Sprint announces new Sanyo phone

Sprint just announced this morning

a new phone for their inventory - Sanyo Katana, a new very slim clamshell
phone, available in 4 different colors. Details on the phone can be accessed

Initial thoughts I have are that they are taking a step back on camera
resolution, and only offer Vision, not Power Vision (EVDO).

Guess I'll just have to wait a few more months till they start offering EVDO
capable products.

Odd ... it has been on their site for a couple of weeks. I considered it
but chose not to look further because of its lack of EVDO.

I just picked up the Samsung MM-920 and I am quite pleased with the phone. I
am testing out its real reception [it as an internal antenna] before deciding
if I should keep it. I bought a bluetooth earpiece but it is defective (you
can't power it on ... the charge light only stays lit for about five minutes),
so I can not say how well bluetooth works as of yet.

I am especially interested in the reception of the 920. I wonder how it
compares to my Sanyo mm-7400.

The MM920 lacks an external antenna, but so far, I sit in 0 or 1 bar reception
and I am able to make and receive clear calls. I was able to use Vision (not
PowerVision ... out of the area for that) with one bar without issue.
Basically, the phone seems to do just a little better than my previous 7400
did with the antenna up. I have yet to check if it will roam well or give me
no signal.

I have a concern that it might feel cheap. I have held the Razors and they
feel rather sturdy for a thin form factor. The Samsung MM900 simply felt
cheap and not at all durable ... I hope the Sanyo is better.

Well, I just checked the very troublesome conference room and this phone
failed miserably. There were no bars, but the phone refused to roam onto
Verizon. I tried to place a call, and after a second I found that the "signal
faded". Then, I tried again, and the call went through but I couldn't hear
more than every other second worth ... very very annoying. My 7400 roamed
digital in that room every time.

order to make a call in that conference room?

Yes, but you can't count on it to roam when you need it to. Also, I have
discovered that the codec is very aggressive with noise cancellation so things
sound a bit choppy if there is any background noise [on the other end]. In
fact, it was so choppy that a call I took today seemed like it was having a
poor connection, when in fact, it was just noisy [sounded like a call center].

This phone is an awesome piece of equipment, but I will have to pass. It is
going back today. What IS nice about it is that you can update the software
over-the-air without a call to CS or stopping into a store.

I don't know if that is true if you look at Verizon's current Razor offering.

Check it out and tell me what you think. Everyone at work that has one of
these says that the user interface blowze and is slow. They have also
compared it to the A900 and the A900 wins featurewise.

What Sprint phone are you going with once you have returned the 920? I am
thinking of getting the 920 because I rely on Telenav and do not want to
carry an external GPS. I understand the the 920 works quite well with
Telenav.

Back to my Sanyo 7400.

It was a real ordeal too. I had decided to take them up on a plan change for
$50 with a new 2-year contract. I had that contract post dated to the
beginning of my billing period on 8/3/06. Well, apparently adding powervision
and getting the new phone reset my contract. Further, upon returning the
phone, apparently I am no longer eligible for a $150 credit next year (I was
only at 13 months) because the clock was "reset". I indicated that I didn't
want to renew my contract then as it wasn't worth it to do so without a phone
and I had one hell of a struggle getting that back. Apparently a priority
note is required to avoid ETF, but we shall see, should I utilize it [but, I
hope I don't]. Long story short is that I was told there was no risk and I
could return it within 30 days if I didn't like it, but in fact, there was
indeed risk ... I lost my chance at $150 towards a new phone for two years and
my contract was reset [with priority notes to the contrary] and I had to get
them to put my retention $10 Vision back on ... my account was set back up
with $15.
