New 755p, but Palm INSTALL TOOL won't work with Vista

Sprint somehow knows nothing about this incompatibility.

The Palm website acknowledges the problem and proposes clunky
workarounds.

Is there an elegant solution?

Have you tried running the Palm software in "Compatibility Mode"?
Other than that, all I can suggest is to dump Vista (I can think of
about 100 other good reasons to dump that piece of crap from M$).

Unless you are dazzled by the Aero interface, I cannot think of one
good reason to use Vista in comparison to XP (or even Windows 2000 for
that matter). I've already "upgraded" 3 machines from Vista to XP
Professional since February and all three of them run much better and
are less of a headache to deal with.

How about running Windows XP within a virtual machine? The virtual machine
software is free and you cans use either an old Windows install disk or
download the "IE6 Compatibility VHD" from Microsoft.

Well, I like Vista - in ten weeks there has never been a freeze
or crash, and experts suggest that it is quite secure from
malware. Since 3.1 I've hated every new OS for a while, but this
one has been an easy transition.

As for the Palm situation, I don't install much and it HotSyncs
fine with calendar, etc. So I'll just put up with it. If I must
install, I'll do a work-around.

Not sure if that VHD would work as it is for VPC, which doesn't support USB.
VMWare does, but I don't think it works with that VHD properly. Guess that
means VMWare (or other VM with USB support) and an old copy of any version
of Windows that is compatible with Palm Desktop.

What I recently did when I needed to reload Docs2Go on my Treo, with no
desire to install the desktop counterpart, was to run the D2G installer and
grab the PDBs/PRCs from the temp folder while the D2G installer was
prompting for a response. Would imagine this is possible with other apps
that don't offer direct PRCs, though a bit clunky and I haven't tried it on
my Vista machines. For apps that don't need/use their own PC installer
copying PRCs to SD is an easy workaround.

That said Palm better get their act together ASAP. It's July and they still
don't have app-install Vista compatibility yet? Sure hope the included
Docs2Go works on currently shipping Palm OS Treos under Vista. You can't
expect everyday users to do the temp folder or VM trick.

Oh yes, good point -- VMWare has a converter; I don't know how well it will
do with the VHD I listed, but it's worth a try
