O/Siris, since you seem to know what is going on, I was wondering if you got
a chance to place with the i500. Since it doesn't have an external
display - personalized ringers are VERY important to me.
I sent this to Samsung:
I would really like to have a personalized ringer for each person - I can do
this on my current LG5350 by converting a wav file to a qcp file. This way I
don't have to look at the phone to know who is calling. I can't tell if this
is a feature witht the i500. I'm not asking about assigning different
ringtones to callers but being able to create my own wav type ringer for
individual numbers so I can make it say "John Doe is calling, Jane Smith is
calling" etc
Thank you
This is the response I got -
You may does this. Go into the address entry (edit), hit details and choice
the special ringer that you desire.
Thanks
I'm not sure if they understood the question so I sent back this - Thanks -
I would like to verify since I don't want to order the SPH -I500 unless it
can do this. How do I upload/download a qcp or wav file to the phone and
then assign it to a specific ringer using the i500

Boy, that was a helpful <ahem> response, wan't it? Sorry 'bout that.
Sometimes, I think the people running the feedback and inquiry portions of
the site just respond with canned stuff. We got an I500 into our lab just
tonight. I got about a 1/2 hour chance to play with one. It does *not*
appear to be able to access our downloads. Big bummer, because I read way
back in January they were going to make it work. However, I'll see what I
can find out.
I may try to access the "ringtone managers" available on sites like
TreoCentral and see if they can do that.

Any initial comments/insight regarding the coolness factor of this
phone?

Re: Tech question on the i500 - O/Siris?
Thanks for the reply. So far, no one has been able to do it but the phone
just came out so I understand. One one forum some people who like to play
around with this sort of stuff think once an SDK becomes available, they'll
be able to do so. I sure hope so.

So far, A-. Someone managed to download Bejeweled to it. I used it to
<ahem> test the display response.
Seriously, I noticed a significant improvement in everything there was to
do. Blazer brought the pages up in a hurry, it switched between apps so
fast you could almost hear the screen pop up. And Bejeweled never once
paused or halted during play. Compared to any other palm phone we have, I
give it a massive thumbs up.
But it's not without problems. The phone flips opn, but not 180 degrees
open. The upper portion rises up and about a 20-30 degree angle. I think
that's going to be tiresome over the long haul. And the Graffiti writing
pad is well placed but noticeably smaller. Over all, I think long-term text
entry is going to be tiresome. Painfully so. But READING text? The screen
is awesome. However, since I work nights, I don't get a chance to check out
its daylight viewing.

Re: Tech question on the i500 - O/Siris?
Thanks for the info.
Since I'm used to my old palm vx, I used the display keyboard and the stylus
to do a search for names. Is the only input on the phone using grafiti or
can you use a stylus on the display?
Thanks

You can definitely use the stylus. I did that for Bejeweled. Hence, I
can't imagine any reason why you could *not* use the display itself for text
entry.

Re: Tech question on the i500 - O/Siris?
I'm going to guess you can't convert wavs or midis to use as ringtones
and then import them to your phone. While Handsprings and Kyoceras
have been able to do this, the last couple Samsungs running Palm OS,
i300 and i330 haven't been able to. I haven't read anything about
added support for it. As far as content downloaded from Sprint, no
Palm phone can use the downloads, at least that's what they tell me.
I'm just assuming that all this is true for the i500 because I haven't
heard anything to the contrary. Usually when there's an improvement,
they let you know about. I hope I'm wrong for everyone that wants one
or has gotten one, but i don't think I am.

You're not wrong. There were rumors flying around internally that the I500
was going to support J2ME downloads just like the "pure" phones. Doesn't
appear to have panned out.
I have heard that there are ringtone managers out there that work for I300's
and I330's. Haven't experienced 'em myself.

I've been fighting something all week long, guys. Sorry if I'm missing
posts. I'm missing days, too, and that won't do the ole mortgage any good,
either. Know what I mean.
I still intend to check on this.

OK, I finally got myself back into work, and took a good look at the I500
and its phonebook. I think I need to explain.
When *I* think of "T9", I think of the proprietary word-prediction
technology in our "pure" phones that is supposed to let you use the keypad
at a fast rate. If that's the T9 that was meant in the inquiry, then I
could not get that to happen. Now, since the original user was, IIRC,
trying to determine the ability to use the device one-handed, I think that
answers the question.
What I *did* get to happen was that I could Grafitti the characters into the
"Find" blank, and the phonebook immediately jumped to the first match. More
characters, better match, the selection imediately moved. So the "T9"-type
finding is there, from what I can tell. I just couldn't seem to get the
phonebook to accept keypad input. I'll take a look a bit further later. I
only had about 10 minutes to "play" with it before another tech needed it
for another call.

I always found it far easier to input data on my PC/Mac 's keyboard, and
then synch for Palm devices.

True enough. However, if I remember correctly (IIRC), the poster for whom I
was posting that response was interested in searching for the stuff once
it's already on the device. Synching is great to put it into the device,
but then you've got to find it again. And that's what the OP was asking
about: finding an entryonce it's in the phonebook.
