My contract on my service will be up soon and Im
wanting to upgrade to a new cell phone.
I currently have the one piece Nokia 6360....and altho
I like it OK.... I HATE the green display!! Very hard
to read. Most of the new phones have BRIGHT colored
LCD displays now days and that's what I want.
However.... some questions.... what abt the flip style
phones? Many of the new Sanyo and Samsung phones are
of the flip style. Is this a hassle to flip and un
flip them every time you use them? Is it also a
potential mechanical weak point?
Also.... what abt the phones with picture taking
features..... or Palm features? Worth having or just
more to go wrong?
And advice or thoughts or opinions? What do YOU have?

Nokia 6360 questions have what to do with Sprint PCS?

Call up Retention/Cancellation, I just got a $100 credit to stay
for another year.

Makes for shorter battery life. Makes for
greater expensive if screen is busted from dropping phone.

Protects screen if phone is dropped. Makes them easier
to carry in pocket or purse. Most (try one out) can be worked one
handedly.

Yes, and yes. If you take dozens of pictures a week, or heavily
utilize a Palm Pilot, they are useful. Pam Pilots are great for folks
with multiple meetings every day where one or more is often changed at
last minute

Go to store and check them out for yourself. Thats why they make so many
different models. What one person likes, another may not.

Re: Help me buy new cell phone?
I find the flip (clamshell style) phones preferable to use vs. locking
and unlocking the keypad on a block style phone to avoid inadvertent
calls. I've owned many and never had a clamshell phone break. Almost
all of them now have external displays so you can see who's calling
before you open the phone (that is, unless you need reading glasses
and are not wearing them).
Pictures... the only good photos I've seen taken on some of these
phones are the advertising shots, with bright saturated colors and
sharp detail. Forget that. They're below average quality snapshots,
IMO. But some people do love it and like picture messaging. It is kind
of fun to assign picture id's to folks on your phone list.
I can highly recommend the Sanyo 8100 in virtually all areas, whether
you use the camera or not. My partner has a Samsung A500 and likes it
as well.

OK...... point taken.

OK.... I will forget the picture aspects..... just get
a real dig cam for that
However...... how abt the combo phones and PDA units?
Does that make a good marriage of devices and features?

The color displays are cool and everything but do you need it? They tend to
be a large drain on battery life, and may not have the same visibility as a
monochrome display... (esp. in direct sunlight) unless you are surfing the
web etc on your phone, you may not really need a color display...

I have had several different flip phones over the years and have never broken
one. I dont find the "flip" feature to be a hassel, I feel like its the best
way to protect the screen and keys. I didn't like the exposed keyboard of my
old Nokia phone, (kept hitting buttons inadvertently while phone was in my
pocket) and didn't like the "keyguard" feature.

As far as what I have - I just purchased the Samsung i500 and am very
pleased! I was an AT&T customer for years and had their analog, then digital
then GSM service. I finally gave up on them 6 months ago due to their poor
coverage and frequent dropped calls. I'm much happier with sprint, I can't
remember my last dropped call; my service is so good, it really is the only
phone I use.
My main complaint about sprint was the cell phone selection. Sprint just
didn't seem to have the same selection/features of other cell phone carriers.
This complaint has been erased by the Samsung i500. I'd been waiting for
the Handspring Treo 600, but once I saw the Samsung, I bought it. If you
are not familiar with it, its a flip phone with built in Palm functionality.
I've carried both a cell phone and a PDA for years, and the samsung lets me
maintain the same functionality in a device which is actually smaller than my
old cell phone! I couln't be happier with it. Its a bit pricy, especially
since it lacks certain features of other "smart" phones (like external memory
cards), but it is functional, small, light, and a beautifully designed phone.
I wouln't buy the phone if you're looking for a new phone and just want to
try out palm functionality, but if you need a phone and you are a palm user,
its great!

Re: Help me buy new cell phone?
>The color displays are cool and everything but do you need it?
No...... I guess I don't really need color at all. I
guess what Im wanting is ANYTHING mono that is better
than what I have with my Nokia 6360 right now. The
display on the 6360 is a dull green. Gets washed out
easy. Terrible!!
Plus I also want to get a CDMA phone..... get rid of
this TDMA.

OK.....point taken on flip phones. I wont be "scared"
of them. lol

Yes..... I may very well get a combo phone PDA unit
next time. Do you feel the Palm OS is best? Does
anyone make a combo phone and hand held PDA that uses
Windows CE?
BTW.... thanks for your help David!!
