Re: 8100 Upgrade??
According to a recent post from Jon Clark, here they are...
"It fixes an intermittent roaming call problem, adds a messaging
shortcut, enchances picture mail (I don't know how, I don't use it)
and adds a feature called "match area code" which will display the
state of the area code of the calling number, as long as caller ID is
displayed. It also adjusts the earpiece volume downward a little
(seems good now - level 8 is no longer distorted but still seems
plently loud), and adjusts the volume for some types of downloaded
ringers - making them a bit louder."
Good luck in finding a store that admits the upgrade exists. I just
faxed a letter to the manager of the local one here, after the tech
brushed me off for the second time... "We don't have it. The phone's
too new."

Again, a few bad techs giving the good ones a bad name, but its starting
to sound like there are a lot more bad techs than they need.
And its BS that its too new. When Vision was launched, some of the
phones had updates released within a week after they were released due
to issyes with the web.

Re: 8100 Upgrade??
Well for me they are using the slammer virus as an excuse. They cant access
the sprint network because the virus took down their sprint intranet.

It did take down part of the intranet, it was up and down all day, but
that still doesn't mean that couldn't get it a few days ago...

Re: 8100 Upgrade??
Are you really a SPCS tech?
If so, can you advise me on precisely what/whom to ask for when I go
to a store to get the 8100 upgrade to v 1.15 SP? Tried another one
today--Santa Monica, CA--and the very pleasant CSR said "Sure, we can
do that. It'll take about 30 minutes." I was stunned! He wrote up a
tech slip, gave me a copy. I ran some errands, returned 35 minutes
later... got my phone back with a notation from THE TECH, "1.14 is the
latest software. You already have it." I tried to explain my position
to another CSR, but he just shook his head and said, "THE TECH says
you already have the latest." (Twice this week THE TECH at the La
Cienega store spoke--through a CSR of course, not to me directly--that
I already had the latest with 1.14.)
So on the way home I got onto *2 figuring I'd really dig into this.
The rep said, "You just got a software upgrade." (No, I got a PRL
update, and told him so.) "Oh," he says, with sudden crystal clear
understanding that I know what I'm talking about. He put me on hold
for about 15 minutes, then came back with, "Do you have version 1.14?"
<Yes, said I> "Well THE TECH says that's the latest software."
Who the hell is "THE TECH"? He/she seems to me to be someone who
apparently is rarely seen, rarely or never speaks to a customer
directly, goes to lunch frequently, has awesome power and commands the
highest level of respect. After all these years I finally understand
how Dorothy felt in the Emerald City as she searched for the Wizard.
Does 1.15 SP TRULY exist, and if it does, how do I insist on getting
it?
I have until Monday when my 14 days are up. No upgrade by then and I'm
cancelling everything and staying with Verizon. Is this software
upgrade a critical thing? Of course not. The phone works great. But
dammit, if it's available then I want it and I should be able to get
it.

Re: 8100 Upgrade??
Well since you mentioned SM, if you are willing to drive I know Inglewood
and WoodLand Hills has it. The teenager techs told me they have it and ready
to go.
Pasadena, Glendale, and Burbank claims the virus took out their systems so
they cant upgrade anything till end of the week.
But I agree this update is elusive. Everyone that has it says how great it
is and I wanted it since Wednesday dammit.

It appears to be Sprint's policy to keep techs away from customers, and
I think it is truly sick.
I have never, ever been able to speak to a Sprint Store tech.

Seems like nothing short of me going there and beating someone over the
head will make them realize that it DOES exist, I've updated several
8100s to that version this week.
Yes, ther WORM is messing with our systems, some computers can't print,
some can't use the sales systems, MSOffice won't work on some, so I can
see if the software that does the updatses may not be working in some
stores (hopefully things will be back up to 90%+ by the end of the
weekend (yes, the IT dept does work on the weekend!).
I've already sent emails to some national managers to re-communicate
these updates for the 8100 and A500 since a lot of stores are denying
that it exists, but I doubt it will help since its obvious that these
techs do not even look over these documents.

Nah, just a lot of them don't like to talk to the customers. Look at it
this way, whenever a customer wants to talk to the tech, their pissed at
the tech, at times like this, the customer is in the right but, most of
the time its because corrosion voids the warranty, its cracked and not
covered etc..
A lot avoid the customers. (Which is also bad).
I talk to a lot of customers every day.

Re: 8100 Upgrade??
I just got off the phone with Sprint's customer care and the lady told
me that there was no update for the 8100 and that the current version
was 1.14sp. Was she misinformed or is there really no update?

Re: 8100 Upgrade??
Thank you for your reply to the group. (Also thanks to Sonny--I was
heading over to Woodland Hills today anyway.)
That said, am I the only one that thinks this is indicative of a
serious customer service problem with Sprint PCS? I left Sprint about
2 years ago, and so many of my friends tell me that CS has gotten so
much better. Frankly, I don't see it. The people in most of the stores
ARE a bit friendlier, but just as ill-informed or plain dumb as
before. And THE TECHS, who basically thumb their noses at me over an
upgrade, even when I bring them information on where and how to find
it drive me crazy.
I like many things about Sprint, including my first Sanyo phone (8100)
and the most affordable one-rate, e.g. F&C America, available. But if
I let myself slide into this one-year contract next week, all I can
say to myself is, "You've been adequately warned."
Back to Oz, it was probably easier to kill the Wicked Witch of the
West than to get this upgrade!

Re: 8100 Upgrade??
Customer care doesn't get notified of the updates for months sometimes.
You should never call and ask them about an update because it will just
be a waste of time.
