Was in Secaucus, NJ today, power went down as most of you know. Only
phones that worked were a Verizon phone and my Sprint phone. Does
anyone have more details on the backup power systems of a cell site /
switching station? I would imagine the whole system would need to be
powered for any of it to function. I have read several posts about
sites having diesel and battery backups. Any more detail would be
    great.

the tower builds were by different firms in each state for Sprintpcs. In
Florida they did a build at our tower site and they included backup.

My understanding is that some are backed up, some aren't. I've seen both
kinds myself -- lonely cell sites that do little more than provide coverage
for one carrier and then connect to a roadside fiber drop or aggregate
everything to a directional microwave link -- with all the electronics in a
large box next to the tower --, all the way to the sites that have numerous
antennas hanging off of them providing coverage for a couple of carriers,
microwave links for contracted connections (and to other cell towers), etc.
that have something of a 'bunker' containing a lot of equipment that have
fairly good sized battery backups in place.

I would be interested in hearing what someone actually working in the
industry has to say about when/how they decide to backup a site or not -- I
imagine a lot of it involves contracts with the various 3rd party traffic
that the sites often carry and the requirement by those 3rd parties to
    provide backup!
