My 14 days is up, got my first bill on the Free and Clear America Plan. No
roaming or LD charges are supposed to apply.
Well, I got nailed for a bunch of roaming charges on a trip we made out of
state, am on hold listening to the music while they try to fix it, hope they
can.

They should be able to clear it up. Chances are the FCA option wasn't
put on your plan correctly. As long as you didn't roam for more than
50% of your total minutes used, you should have nothing to worry about.
Good luck.

He should still have nothing to worry about. They can't suddenly start
charging him. They can remove FCA and leave him with FC on the next billing
cycle however, but that won't cost him now.

Kevin is correct, you are generally given a 3 month grace period before
they begin to talk to you.
The 50% rule is to just avoid people from activating sprint phones who
do not live/work/play in the service area. It can expensive...

Kevin,
Get names, dates, EXACT promises, and company ID's from everyone who
promises you this.
*My* understanding is that >50% roaming any two months within a 3-month
period will get you removed from F&CA.

Re: Watch out for Roaming charges on FCA
The story continues. On the phone, Sprint correctly identified that the
charges were incorrect, it took them awhile to figure out why. I don't
understand their explanation, something an "LR" code not being properly
attached to me <something or other>. They promised to issue credit.
I check my on line invoice a few hours later.
My bill went up another $14.
I will be on the phone again later.

Re: Watch out for Roaming charges on FCA
That's the plan I want, so I listen closely to your comments. But SprintPCS
tech won't active my Nokia 6185 due to not WLNP compliant and Sprint ecare
says there is a software patch to make the phone compliant.
For $250 per car, I can change out the CARK-91 speakerphones. I'd rather
keep the Nokia 6185's for a bit more.

Re: Watch out for Roaming charges on FCA
Doesn't FCA promise 50 MINUTES of free roaming only? That is what is
offered in my area.
Initially they had "up to 50%" rule, but that seems to have changed.

I am with you bwana, I had ATT&T for the last several years, been using a
T-250 Quad band phone with pocket net service since they came out with the
T-250. Would still be using it but I got a notice last month that next
month they were shutting down the pocketnet service. The only way to keep
internet service - I'm a road warrior and use the heck out of it - was to to
go to GSM. Problem with GSM is the coverage is bad here, and none of their
GSM phones had analog backup. (The main use of a phone is to talk, right?)
So there were plenty of areas where my phone would not work (travel to the
boonies frequently). I think ATT&T screwed up big time with their GSM
rollout and choice of phones.
The main reason I went with Sprint was the better voice coverage, internet
service on the phone, and they SEEMED to have a comparable "one rate" plan.
.. Also Sprint offered a lump sum deal on a wireless modem card, with
unlimited usage. ATT charges you by the kilobytes for high speed, I
figured it was too expensive for my usage. (I was using a nokia with an
analog modem card, dialing into my ISP at 9600 baud., so paying by the
minute and Slow.)
But I digress. The ATT&T ONE RATE plan was outstanding, customer service
was outstanding. Rarely had to call them, but when I did, no waiting,
invariably reached competent help, and if there was a problem, they fixed
it. Sprint is a wild circus, dinosaur management it seems by comparison
(you know, stomp on the tail, it takes awhile for the signal to get to the
brain. When they want to turn they have to plan in advance, otherwise the
feet go one way while the eyeballs another).
Well, I'm here, I guess arguing over my phone bill will be a big feature of
life from here on out. On the whole its not bad, the phone works pretty
good, the vision service is pretty classy compared to the black on green
text of the pocket net service, and the wireless modem screams - its like
having wireless ISDN whilst tooling down the turnpike at warp one.
BUT: customer service is really, really bad. As soon as ATT&T gets their
crap together and offers data capable phones that you can TALK on regardless
of where you are, I will happily send Sprint $150 to cancel and count
myself the richer. Who needs this bad CS crap?

Re: Watch out for Roaming charges on FCA
This stuff happens--to us all--simply call c/s, tell them, politely, you
expect them to go by what the brochure reads--( I tend to keep copies of
these) I am no attorney, but this is a contract they have offered, and
you have accepted--now lets all make it work---I keep posting this - but
its so true--they are going to honor it--or ask them to cancel the
contract--I cant' believe they won't honor it, but you have simple legal
recourse thru small claims court and I again refer to the posts of Nomen
Nescio----who explains so well about the fine print stuff--in essence
you can't go around lying to folk about a product and try to hide behind
fine print--most of these things are sort of accidents---but if this
were 100% true I wonder it would appear that at least part of the time
the mistake would be against the big companies rather than always
(almost) against the little consumer--humm--some of this could be
purposeful accidents becaue the bean counters figure than not everyone
will complain, and they will get by with some of it and just fix the
ones who complain--what the old saying that the squeaking wheel gets the
grease (something like this) just make noise with them. sorry for long
post

you seem to be stuck in an affiliate area. If you want to get 50%, you'll
have to move. Affiliates are just another reason sprint is screwing up all
the time.

Re: Watch out for Roaming charges on FCA
You may be right, but this came off the sprintpcs. web page tonight
also, the 50% rule has a trick that I don't understand, but it is 50% of
the minutes used, not 50% of your plan minutes--there are some specific
requirements, these specific requirement don't seem to come under the
term " fine print", as assuming you have met them, then I would expect
the carrier to be obligated to hold up their end of the agreement
PCS Free & Clear America Service Plans: Available with a one-year PCS
Advantage Agreement through 08/24/03, and only to customers residing in
an area covered by the Sprint Nationwide PCS Network. Sprint may
terminate service if the majority (at least 50%) of minutes used in any
given month are used for calls while off the Sprint Nationwide PCS
Network. Not available with single-band phones. Availability and pricing
may vary by market. Offers may not be available with certain other
promotions/options, and are subject to withdrawal without notice.
Additional restrictions apply. Call or visit a Sprint Store for details.

Apparently you have to have an address inside the the network
coverage--and

Re: Watch out for Roaming charges on FCA
OneRate wasn't all that great....i am seeing more coverage and roaming
agreements with FCA.
Plus, a lot of regions with great 800MHz CDMA have extremely poor AMPS
networks. My little TDMA 800MHz phone was pretty much useless.
