Why no current Motorola phones?

The "Quick rundown of phones" is good. Sanyo 4500 was recommended to me,
and I still see the Sanyo 6000 on websites, but with no availability.

Are there any recently discontinued phones that have a track record to
justify purchasing a used phone?

The 4500 is quite old. At least 2 years.

So is that a recommendation for the 4700?

BTW Sprint ecare replied to me stating there is a software patch to make my
Nokia 6185 WLNP compliant. The local Sprint tech in Westminster, CA
disagrees.

WLNP = Wireless Local Number Portability?

How would that relate to the handset (aside from subsidy locks)?

If you ever activated a phone it would have MIN and phone number field.
Since the 6185 isn't from sprint, you would probably have to send it in to
nokia. And I don't guarantee it would even be able to be activated on
sprint.
So....
Get phone sent to nokia for firmware flash,
Get MSL,
Hope sprint would activate it.

That's not true at all. Sprint Stores can flash an unactivated phone,
and only Sprint performs firmware upgrades on Sprint-enabled phones
(such as the 6185).

If your store is corporate you need to tell the tech they need to go to
the "tech web site" and download the latest firmware. If they are an
affiliate store then you need to travel to a corporate store.

BTW, for your information ammo, the latest version of the 6185's
firmware is SPR531_6185_D4 and the store needs to update their systems
with the latest firmware if they don't have it.

have an upgrade to web enable it, and never delivered, which caused
Sprint and Nokia to have a falling out.

I also had the 6185. Loved that phone. And I seem to remember the upgrade
that web enabled the phone...I could be wrong tho, it's been a couple years
and seveal phones since then....

I remember people getting their nice 6185, if they were lucky enough to get
their hands on one that worked, fried when they brought it in for an update.

On a related note, I wish Nokia would start making phones that look/feel
like they used to. Hard rubber buttons, black phone, no shiney or sparkling
stuff.

sorry, I'm still confused - what aspect of a handset would make it
compliant with WLNP. Isn't that a network feature?

How does this build improve on 530/D3 (4/11/2000)?

Are there places which can still program this? The Sales & Service
store on Devon & Lincoln, Chicago says they no longer have the ability
(cable?) to do it. I found this out when I tried to get a PRL upgrade
a few months ago (after an OTA left me with 10632).

To be fair, Sprint credited my account $70 to encourage me to switch
to something newer. Also, the mic (tx) audio is getting unintelligibly
bad - though it's not consistent.

yes, the browser functionality was added in an upgrade

In short, the phones need to be able to support the phone number *and* an
internally generated number that closely resembles the phone number, but
that will increasingly be different than the phone number. The phone number
will continue to operate as before, but the internal number will be used to
actually track usage and allow for proper billing.
