I may be in the minority here, but I'm really not interested in phones
with cameras or any other gadgets. My cell phone is just that, a phone.
I've had my LG model TP5200. I considered buying a newer phone but I
don't need a color screen and I own a nice camera so none of those
features appeal to me. I want the next phone I buy to have longer
reception range. I can't complain about the quality of the signal
because it is clear. However, I travel to some rural areas in North
Carolina and Virginia. If I'm lucky, I can barely get a signal and
switch to analog roam. People who have service with the local provider
have told me that they still use the old analog bag phones because they
will bring in the signal better than hand held digital cell phones.
Hopefully someone will spend some R&D funds on this.

    Regards,
    Brad

    hey fred flinstone....

think out the box. some parents value the ability to check in visually on
their 3yr, 4yr, or 5yr old child at pre-school or at the day care center.
soon you'll be able to do that via your cell phone...and connect to the live
    camera at the daycare center.

you sound like people who wanted personal computers to be word processors,
spreadsheets, and fast calculators.....that's it. i suppose you also want a
basic Willy's 1944 Jeep, a vehicle that just drives....as opposed to a car with
features like automatic transmission, powersteering, A/C, Stereo CD player,
Airbags, god forbid you have a car with an actual computer on-board....

I'm with Brad. Right now, the gadgetry on the cell phone does not appeal
to me. They still fall under the "Toys" category to me. I am very much
into technology, but I'd rather pay for the technology when I need it.

Ya know you guys would get laughed at in Finland and Japan. Laughed at in your
lack of imagination/vision of all that you could manage with these
devices.....if our infrastucture was up to par.

Even today with our crummy (USA standards)....the commercials are no joke. We
got a picture phone for my Great Grandmother who's in a rest home....she's 90,
nearing the end of her life....and pretty much confined to a bed/wheel chair.
The family's spread out all over the country....and the highlight of her life
is to get a picture on one of the Grand kids or Great Grand kids every other
    day.

Many of us have an elderly person in this situation and this is just a simple
little thing we can all do, today, to make a difference to a loved one's life.
What you see as a "toy" makes a meaningful impact to someone's life.

Think people. A couple with an infant can now go out to dinner with the
comfort and peace of mind knowing that all's well with their child with the
babysitter. And they can see their child comfortably sleeping at any moment.
Again, if you're not a parent of an infant...you can't relate to the value of
    this simple use.

No argument, IF that's what you're looking for.

For some of us, however, a phone is (supposed to be) just a phone.

Global, you have a point, but as others have said, some people are looking
    for the basics.

I'm sure that there will be low-end phones that will have good reception and
B/W screens, but you have to keep in mind that many new cell phone users are
young, hip teenagers that have to have the latest and greatest. Market
    demand = market offerings.

I have a picture phone, and I wish I could have gotten a cheaper non-camera
flip-phone by Sanyo that had great reception and decent features. Frills
weren't too important to me. But after having the phone for a while, I
realize that the camera is decent, and I'm happy with my purchase.

For those of you who agree with Brad, think of it this way: 3G is in its
infancy. The continued R&D will refine the rough-hewn "toys" of today into
a product that you very may well have interested in the near future. These
"early models" are just one step into innovation.

Brad I'm with you!!!! The ability to use the phone is the most important
    thing. Everything else is secondary.

The Sanyo 4900 had good reception, or so the legend goes I have never owned
one. But now it's obsolete. I want a big battery in a very sensitive and
powerful Tri-mode phone. No gimmicks just the most useable phone R&D can
    provide.

I am with you in this. My wife still uses Denso (remember them?) TP2200,
it is very good phone. I use Sanyo 6200, and I am happy with it. When the
time comes for me to change my phone, I hope Sprint has simple phone.

If you are looking for a good phone without any frills I would suggest Sanyo
6400, or 6200 it you can get it from other sources (like ebay).

6400 is basically a 6200 with vision and change in the position of the Menu
button. 6200 has menu button in odd place.

I do not care about vision or camera.

Globaldisc....I'm curious 'why' you feel everyone else needs to think in the
same rut you are in then feel you have to trash them 'cause you want
    attention ?

The Cell phone industry is in its infancy compared to everything else and
does NOT do a good job of doing 'anything'. There are a lot of years and
dollars to be spent before these phones will much more than a toy for
anyone. "some" who do little traveling find them dependable but until the
expansion of service areas is complete....it is going to be total trash and
    gimmicks.

Personally I like 'some' of the gimmicks but it is a phone that we use it .

I'd like to see your reply and will watch but will not respond to your
future messages so have at it.

I have a Sanyo 4900 and its reception is outstanding. It is not
obsolete, but rather discontinued. :-) There is a difference there. I
tend to think obsolete means the phone would no longer be functional in
any way with today's technology. Discontinued just means that the phone
is no longer being manufactored... but support for it is still there.
There are thousands of 4900 users and probably will be for some time to
    come.

I am all for technology like camera phones and whatnot... but not at the
expense of basic needs like call quality. A cell phone, camera equipted
or not, should be a phone, first and foremost...

The best phone on Sprint is the Nokia 3585i And it does not have any frills
    just a great phone

I totally agree with everyone on the phone needs to be a phone
first...everything else SHOULD be secondary issue. That's what I love
so much about my 8100. The camera is just there, I hardly ever use it
anymore. The phone, however is a solid, dependable phone. (At least
mine has been.) Now Global, I also see and agree with your point of
veiw. I do feel that you could try to make your point in a little less
    aggressive, "pushy" maner though. IMO

Re: Tired of phones with gadgets

The reason I'm not buying one of the remaining 4900s is that it's not a
tri-mode phone. It's dual band would have me in analog often. If it were
    tri-mode I would buy a couple!

    Thanks for the comments
    Mike
