I am looking for a new Vision phone and want to be able to connect to a
laptop to do some email checking.

Would I be better off with the Sanyo 8100 or the Samsung VGA1000?

I read some where that the Samsungs work better with laptops because they
have a true USB cord with special drivers rather then a USB cord that
transforms the data into serial and then uses the windows serial driver
which has a cap at 115,000 bps

Is there any truth to this? If so I would assume I would be better off
with the VGA1000? My concern with that is it seems to be harder to find
    cables for that phone.

    Any ideas?

Re: Best Phone to connect to Laptop

From what i have read, the Samsung A500 is the last Sprint released
phone that will work with a laptop connection. Apparently they figured
it would be easier to "fix" the phones rather than attempt to limit or
    police the usage.

Re: Best Phone to connect to Laptop

I experimented some with a USB cord hooked into the Sanyo 5300. It worked
for surfing and email, but crapped out on doing things like file transfer.

There have been a number of posts on this whole subject , look from July to
today should give you some good information.

Sprint is kind of schizo on you doing this anyway, depending on what
customer service rep you talk to and some of the posts you see here from
the Sprint guerrilla, (God bless'm) hooking your laptop up to your phone is
either 1)OK, 2)Not OK, 3) OK so long as you don't abuse it, and 4) Its OK so
long as you don't abuse it and we don't change our mind, in which case we
can charge you 1) a lump sum 2) a horrendous amount per kilobyte or 3) a
horrendous amount per minute connected, but bottom line, 4) you'll get
screwed if we decide to catch you once we figure out what our policy is.

I did not find the performance satisfactory, and one Sprint rep said the
phone was not really designed for that, and that heavy usage could somehow
break it (I presume the software). Well, maybe. (My usage is to pass files
and stuff back and forth from the field to the corp FTP site).

(Prior to that I used cellular PCMCIA card connected to an anlog phone that
dialed my provider. Tricky, it would only work with ATT&T as the provider,
it was slow (9600) and in some places the connection would not hold, it
would say it was connected but nothing would happen.)

So I decided to be a good boy and bought the Sprint Merlin card (PCMCIA
card) and, that works pretty damn good. Its simple, compared to fussing
with wires and the phone. I have used it around Florida, Mass and Vermont,
and coverage was decent. Speeds varied, locally it was like wireless ISDN,
file transfer indicating 70-90 kbs, not locally I'd say its like dialup
based on file transfer speeds. Cost is a tad pricey $80 a month for
unlimited usage, but it works well.

I've connected them both and find both phones acceptable for a laptop
connection, with maybe a slight nod to the VGA1000 (A620). You can
find the A620 cable only on ebay, to my knowledge. I bought mine from
a seller in Baltimore named Hi-Spid and it works great. The Sanyo
cable is available at Radio Shack for about $20.

This may well be your experience, but I've had no problems connecting
a Sanyo 5300 and a Samsung A620. Granted I'm not using massive amounts
of FTP, but for web surfing and email--in any amount you dare (dare,
not care) to use, heavy, light or in-between--both work just fine. And
    pretty darned snappy, too.

I'm waiting for the you-can't-do-this-anymore letter from SPCS to
    arrive.

I think he lied to you. When I was re-signing up with Sprint a month
ago, I heard a salesperson in a Sprint store tell a customer that
Sprint didn't allow use of the phone as a modem. When the very same
salesperson got to me, I said right away that data connection with the
phone as a modem was extremely important to me. The reply? Amazing:
"Yes, you can do that, but we don't sell the cables. You can buy them
at Radio Shack and on ebay, though." I swear to God. Then he promptly
    sold me a phone.

Like I said, I'm waiting for the you-can't-do-this-anymore letter from
SPCS to arrive. I will cancel service on the spot, and if I have to
pay the $150 then so be it.

Haven't I read somewhere (recently) that the wireless stuff (vision),
the carriers have spent billions on is only about 2% utilized--If this
is true, can you imagine the money they are losing on this?? can it be
true about all this stuff we read about the carriers pissing off the
    few that are using it,
their goal would be to reuce the use even further??--this is like the
the record companies suing their customers over downloading--that to me
would be one great way to make me loyal to whoever tried that--and leery
of doing business with such a company.

Probably I have missed the posts on this, but those of us who do "PAY"
to use vision should be rewarded (and I guess we really are) rather than
    picked on. comments?

I wish the SprintPCS employees could be more candid as to the carrots
and stocks used, that encourages the salespeople and CSRs to be so
    dishonest.

All Vision phones support being used as a modem, so there really is no
"best" phone. Generally the phones with better reception (Sanyo 4900,
P300, etc) and are candybars tend to do better with #777, simply
because they can get better reception and thus higher speeds.

I could very well be wrong, but I thought that with the 2.5G system voice
was the same as data. So less data would mean more voice capacity on a
    given site.

    Hi Rexy,

    I just bought the A620 (VGA1000).... I figured I could type #777 and
press send and hear something..... but I just get a # disconnected
message. Does this service still exist?.... or can you only dial
    #777 through the data cable?

Dont pay the $150 ETF. if the contract was entered into under false pretenses
(using phone as modem is OK), then its invalid. Write to your Attornet General
with a certified copy to Sprint Corporate in Kansas.

How are people using their cell phones as modems, exactly? Hook the phone
up to a laptop, yes, got that much. Then what? Is there software I'd
need on the PC side? Is there something specific I'd need to dial on the
    phone?

Depending on what exactly is involved, I may see about hooking it up to my
PDA. It would indeed be rather nice to access email on the road.

Radio Shack has the cable for the A310 which works fine with the A620.
