Well that nails it down doesn't it? It will do SMS "when available";
obviously not any time soon or they'd name a target date. Likely
Sprint's engineers have their hands full working on PTT.

I take that as at least a positive sign that it *is* being worked on and
is coming soon. It gives the speculation rumors a little more evidence
to go on as this is the first phone that Sprint didn't have that feature
taken out of.

Speaking of "Features Removed"....
Here is an interesting tidbit for you.

I contacted Nokia inre to phone features they remove
based on a company's desired device features.
They did in fact tell me that the Nokia 3585i STILL
has the SMS feature in the phone...the option was
disabled from the phone's menu options AND if
Sprint PCS decided they wanted the feature enabled
then the Nokia Tech staff would design a software up-
grade for the phone that would enable this feature.
I found their information very interesting.
Nokia wrote to me:

"Sprint PCS may offer software upgrades as they become available. "
"The concerns with your Nokia 3585i phone
are dependent upon Sprint PCS rather than a feature of the phone itself.
"

So....at this point I would have to say it is going to be
up to Sprint PCS to do -right- by allowing the many custs
to have the device upgraded for this service.

I could be wrong, but I thought SMS was software based anyway, so,
technically, any phone could be upgraded to use SMS. For this reason, I
would not put stock in the statement that SMS is coming.

You still need SMS _servers_ at the provider's end.

So yes, Sprint has some work they need to do to implement SMS.

I assume Sprint is weighing the cost of implemented SMS versus how many
foks want it and how much extra they could charge for it. Goiven Sprint
has now set itself up for having to do a firmware upgrade (something
that was promised for the 6185 and never happened) and hasn't set a
estimated date for introducing SMS, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Well the fact that Sprint went to the trouble of having SMS removed from
the menu means SMS is later rather than sooner, if ever; as having folks
come in for firmware uogrades is a pain, it was promised for the 6185
and never happened. Now Sprint isnt saying anything and Nokia says it
may be offered.

It just came out. No rebates yet. Amazon doesnt even carry it yet.

I (well my wife) owns the Nokia 3588i::

A. SMS has NOT been removed from the menu. You can go to messages, and
create a text message and create a recipient list. It will also let you
START to send the message. It then says: "Messaging services not available
yet. You will be notified by text message when the service is available"
or something like that.

B. The phone is FREE after INSTANT REBATE with new activation or adding an
additional line to your existing account. At least that's what they are
offering in Southern California.

FREE is good. Any Sprint employees know and/or allowed to say where that
promotion exists, since it is not National (yet?).

Interesting. Nokia is giving out incorrect information then, based on whats

So, Phill, give us a firm date as to the earliest you expect SMS and
the latest.

3 months after PTT launch would be my guess.

There realy is not much different between the 3585 and the 3588 as far as
useful things. Perhaps a little better battery life
