Has anyone been able to get the "real SMS" to work on the Nokia 3588i?
I keep trying and I receive the following error message:
"Service not available yet...you will be notified when it is available".
I tried calling Tech Support and the guy was CLUELESS.
First he says: That phone is not capable. I tell him....WRONG.
Then he says: Nokia disabled that feature and there is no option for
creating a text message, so I walk him through the menus and prove him
wrong....again.
He then says: This feature will be coming later. I say "you guys release a
phone that Sprint and their employees claim to support "real SMS" and the
phone is released before the service is available? That seems odd".
He THEN says: You are correct...it should do "true SMS" and tells me he is
going to create a Trouble Ticket.
After waiting for him to create a Trouble Ticket for 5 minutes while on
hold, he tells me his computer froze and I have to call Back Tomorrow NIGHT.
SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH
Anyone had any luck getting a "real SMS" to work on this phone?
Thanks in advance.

Sprint has not enabled its system to handle SMS, and no date has been
stated as to when to expect that service.
If you need to use SMS, you are currently OUT OF LUCK on the SprintPCS
system.

Just like it says in all the literature for that Nokia, this will be=20
supported *when* the service is available. It's not yet.
It's coming, but it's not there yet.

It's so far away there aren't even rumors that might say "Summer 2004".

They wouldn't have released the phone with it enabled if it was that far
away. Look at the 4700 and 5150, they had the ability to take in the
data speeds of Vision, but it was disabled because they were released
way before Vision was, and they were never marketed as a 'Vision' phone
(just 3G voice).
The 3588i is being advertised as SMS compatible, my guess would be that
its not too far off, and if Sprint PCS is smart (speculation on this
part) it will be out with the holiday promotions, before WLNP takes
effect.

Either its so far off that Sprint can't even begin to estimate (like it has for
Ready-Link) or Sprint is incredibly stupid for failing to do so, and thus
losing sales.
SMS may be out for Holiday Season - Holiday xmas 2004.

What possible reason could Sprint have for not giving an estimated date to
encourage buyers, IF IT HAD ONE.

Just curious, but why the delay? Virgin Mobile already offers SMS, so
it would seem like the network already supports it. And those of us
with SendNote have pretty much proven to ourselves that SMS is practical
on the PCS network as it currently is set up, AND that our present
phones can do it.

Re: Nokia 3588i "Real SMS"
Sprint has outsmarted itself in the past and has missed the bus as far
as what features will take off (or even if they have benefits). Chances
are Sprint will stay with it's secondary messaging client for SMS as
they do not want to drop money on the eqipment to fix their SMS to be
like every one elses.
It's a good thing WLNP is coming
it's a bad thing that Sanyo Electronics is staying with Sprint, they do
make great phones.

Because, to be blunt, I don't think the higher-ups *really* understand=20
how popular this will be. In the area where I live, US Cellular and=20
AT&T both advertise the text messaging capabilities of their phones, and=20
that's been around long enough to tell me it works to get customers in=20
the door. And I don't think the people higher up the pyramid see that=20
happening.
It may also be Sprint's concentration on business of late. This isn't=20
really a business use, so maybe it just doesn't have that "glamour"=20
attention. Plus, SPCS never has been all that successful at advertising=20
to a younger crowd. Once again, text messaging seems to appeal most to=20
a younger crowd.
And it *does* have an estimated date. I think I'm safe saying that=20
much.

It's not delayed so far as I can determine. I don't know why it's=20
taking this long, but it *appears* to be on the schedule they desired=20
for it.

Re: Nokia 3588i "Real SMS"
Just like the Sanyo 4900 was supposed to be PTT. Sprint routinely
misses deadlines and quite frankly gets much of it's sales pitch wrong.
Just look at the Vision launch in retail. "it's 3G" so what did that
mean to the consumer, that was never explained as not even Sprint knew.
