I just wanted to contribute some positive feedback to the group. As a
result of recommendations from various posts and a wealth of good
information from the Retention FAQ, I've been able to arrange very
satisfactory deals for myself and my s.o. I appreciate people who shared
experiences and recommendations. I frankly thought that as low volume users
there would be little room for improvement but we both were able to get:

    $30/month
    300 anytime minutes
    Unlimited N&W (starting 8p)
    Long distance included
    Unlimited PCS-to-PCS

Since most of our daytime calling is coordinating our activities with each
other, the PCS-to-PCS is a big boon and it leaves us a lot of anytime
    minutes of other calls.

Now the mixed bag. I have to mention that our experience at the local
Sprint store was appalling. Because her existing phone had just died, my
girlfriend needed a new phone. The retention folk made us aware of the
"2003 existing customer hand-set trade up" program but indicated that a
Sprint store had to be involved in the purchase, and would evaluate the
credits for the trade up. We went to the local store and were told that
despite being a 3-year always-on-time customer, she was entitled to only $20
credit, and that there would be a new $35 activation fee for the new phone
(which turned out to be incorrect). Since we were looking at a Samsung
A460, retail $129.99, the cost to "continue" would be $144.99. At the time
I was flabbergasted, especially since they were offering $59.99 prices for
    new customers.

We walked out, and almost into a Verizon store based on that experience.
After calming down, I called another Sprint store in the area. There I
found out that there was NOT a activation fee on a replacement phone. I
also found out that the 1st store had put down in the customer notes that we
had been offered a fabulous discount deal and declined it. Fortunately, the
gentleman at the 2nd store was a lot more helpful. He indicated that the
trade up deal for us was not a good one, that all that was needed was the
replacement phone, and suggested that we check other retailers because they
were restricted by Sprint as far as what they could over, but that he new
there were better deals out there. What a refreshing attitude! (Made up
for the clueless unhelpful person in the 1st store).

As a result, I was able to purchase a new Samsung A460 today at Costco for
only $67.99, with an accessory pack and lifetime warranty thrown in. Hmmm,
save $60 and free stuff. Not a bad deal. I strongly suggest that if you
are looking for either new service (they are waiving activation fees, too)
or new hardware, Costco is definitely worth checking out.

Anyway, hope this experience is helpful for others.

    Thanx, Ric

It's a clone of SAM's and has a $45 annual membership fee, sometimes less or
free for a year when a new store opens.

Costco is a membership-based warehouse shopping store. It's in the same
model as the old Price Club stores. I already pay for the annual membership
of $25 (some union, credit union, civil service, and other employee groups
get membership for free) since I use it for other regular shopping
(groceries, clothes, hardware, equipment) so it wasn't any additional charge
for me. Although I couldn't confirm it, an associate said that some Radio
Shack stores were offering similar discounts or would match the Costco
price. The short answer for me is that phone purchases were better done via
    3rd parties.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanx, Ric

So then the only real question is whether or not you would exceed the
membership fee with savings from products bought there.
I remember once a few years back I strolled into the door of a costco, not
    knowing what they were about.
I was 'greeted' by some damn rude bufoons, who acted like they thought they
were guarding Fort Knox or something, and they basically told me that unless
I have a membership,I could just turn my ass right back around - Which I
    promptly did.
Under those circumstances,I wasn't at all inclined to inquire just how to
    get a membership.
I have a lifelong personal boycott going of a few stores that I have
    recieved rude treatment from.
Don't know how national ABC Warehouse is,but I ran into a smart ass
salesman there about 8 years ago,and I've never went back since, and never
will. Not even for a toaster.
This one little store around my house, about 12 years ago,I went into and
bought a 99 cent lighter. Went out to my car to light a smoke, and it didn't
work. Went back inside to get another one,but that dumb ass wouldn't have
any part of that, claiming that I might just be bringing back another
lighter of the same make, color and model.
I whipped that thing at his forehead and told him I'll never come back, and
    haven't.
I might just give this costco one more shot though, and see if the SOB's
will at least let me look around to determine if a membership is in my
    interest.

Costco is like Sam's. I think of it like a Target compared to Wal-mart.
Yes they have a membership like Sam's. I buy my Sprint phones there
because of the warranty. No hassle like Sprint or other stores if your
    phone were to break.
Now, as to being asked if you are a member before you enter. I am
all for that. It kind of keeps the white trash out of there. If you
can't afford the small membership fee then personally I feel it is
worth having you as a customer. This is the same policy as Sam's
    club.
I have always been treated well by Costco.

I'm guessing you meant 'not' worth having ..
As far as treating people like **** at the door - Well then what does one
have to mail an application to them to become a member or what ?
Don't people have to walk in the door to inquire about becoming a member in
    their grand organization ?
I typically spend $5,000 a year or more on gizmos and gadgets.
If them sons of *****es don't like the smell of my money I'll damn sure
    find someone who does.
I'm gonna give it one more shot, and if they treat me the same way I'm
likely gonna come back after hours and light their **** up.
If you consider that white trash behavior fine lets just hope out paths
never cross then because you go flinging your superior attitudes anywhere
else besides your residence or computer you stand a strong chance of having
your face rearranged, and your precious cell phone bashed across the bridge
    of your nose.

Costco, like Sams typically has the cream of the crap on Electronics.
Few top brands, lots of "remaindered" kinds of things. The name brands
(like HP) are no cheaper there than at CompUSA type stores.

I just bought a Samsung VGA1000 at Costco for $249.95. CompUSA had
it $20 cheaper, but Costco threw in a free accessory pack (hands-free kit,
travel charger, and belt clip) plus an extended battery, as well as the better
warranty. I thought that was worth the extra $20.
