    Hi
    I had assumed that Sprint PCS will support SMS - but it does not seem
    to do so. The closest it comes to offering it is Short Mail - which
    requires a wireless internet ready phone. Is this understanding
    correct?
    I am trying to communicate on SMS to folks outside US. Am wondering if
    they can send me SMS and I can at least be alerted on mobile OR an
    email can be sent to my account.
    Any suggestion on this will be very useful
    Thanks

    SprintPCS doesn't support industry SMS. You have to log on through Vision
    to send or retrieve an SMS message. It really sucks!

    you can send a message to [email protected] where x is your
    PCS number and you will recieve it as a sms. Also, some carriers' SMS
    messages will go to your PCS. I have only tried with t-mobile, but it
    worked.

    Sprint has only ever sold one model phone that does SMS, the Nokia 3588i. It is
    impossible to do SMS on SprintPCS currently.

    SprintPCS claims to have SMS "In the Future", and you can watch a flame war
    develop should you want information more precise than that. And it is Sprint
    PCS employees that in a rare moment of truth tell us they are told anything
    that will claim they know but can't tell.

    the treo 600 will support it as well but there was a new app just released
    called treo600sms that is awesome and works perfectly just like standard sms
    on any carrier but better.

    The reason there is only one phone model that does SMS is because true SMS
    is supposed to be launched soon, but currently does not exist on the SPCS
    network.

    It's a shame, because both Sprint and Verizon would make money off me if
    Sprint had already had SMS; my wife and I would probably make extensive use
    of the service. Verizon has working two-way SMS and has had it for some time
    now, so it's available on my phones, but not on the wife's SPCS phone.

    Lack of true SMS has always been one of my biggest complaints about Sprint.
    It's supposed to be coming, but I don't believe there is a firm launch date
    yet.

    Yeah, that might be, but it would be really cool if SPCS got off their asses
    and launched true SMS already.

    Nope. The Treo 600 does it, too, once SMS is implemented.

    And, by the way, we've been authorized to report SMS will be implemented "i=
    n=20
    December." Not a date, obviously, but at least some real information.

    That application uses a proxy connection to Shortmail to send messages. As=

    such (since the original poster mentioned it), it will not support=20

    December, Steve. We've been authorized to say that much now. A LOT of 358=

    Will existing phones be flash-able to SMS capability? Wifey wants a Hitachi

    They way they've described it, I would think it could be backwards compatib=
    le=20
    via an application much like MiniSendNote. But I see nothing in our system=
    on=20
    plans to render previous models inherently compatible with the new SMS.

    Oh, Rob, Rob, Rob, why do you do this to me?

    All you'd be likely to need is a firmware upgrade.

    Yes ... well, how many firmware upgrades would they have to complete,
    just for sms on current phones? 10, 15?
    That's a lot of firmware upgrades to create, test and fine tune ...

    What would be nice if they could offer a free application download to
    use. Whether they can do that is another question.
