    This morning I called *2 to have them flag my phone for a PRL update.
    I got the english/spanish greeting then 15 seconds of silence. Then
    it started ringing another extension and I heard this: "We at Sprint
    have determined that your phone needs an important update-please do
    not hangup before it is finished". Then some music another
    announcement that "it will take about a minute-please do not hangup
    until it completes", more music than an announcement that it is
    finished and I can complete my call. Tried it on a friend's 3585i and
    had to talk to a rep to flag and called back 5 mins later and got the
    same procedure as I got without talking to a rep. It might have been
    the fact that I have a F&C America plan and my friend just has a F&C
    plan.

    He might have had, at least on record, a more recent PRL version
    than yours (the devices actually may have had the same PRL, but your
    account might have had an earlier version recorded).

    In any case this is all standard operating procedure stuff. If you
    would like to learn more about this process, you might search Google news
    archives under terms like "PRL" "OTA update" "over-the-air" and so forth.
    Or if you have other specific questions, by all means ask them here and
    you're sure to get lots of answers.

    I had previously PRL 10020 and my friend had 10018. On previous PRL
    Updates, I always had to talk to CS on *2 to flag the phone for a PRL
    Update even if I had the currently previous PRL.

    That's exactly why. We periodically flag all F&CA subscribers for PRL upda=
    tes. =20
    Maybe not periodically in the sense of a regular schedule for it. But they=
    did=20
    tell us they'd auto-flagged all F&CA customers.

    It's more complicated than that. My wife and I have identical phones. Mine
    was updated automatically and hers had to be flagged and call back. Both on
    the same account, if that matters.

    Somebody in a sprint store or call center checked a box in the system which
    allows OTASP (over-the-air service programming). This is a function that
    has been available in the system for quite awhile. The better CSR's will
    tap the box and ask you to call *2 for an auto-update of the PRL. As a
    note, be sure you verify the PRL has changed, as it is not 100%.
