A while ago, I figured out how to make ringtones for the iPhone. This allows you to use any sound or song you like for your ringtone. The only limitation is that it cannot be longer than 40 seconds, but you can easily trim it down.
You need to use a Mac to do it in this way. I do not know if there are ways to do it on Windows, as I do not use Windows and do not have a Windows computer.
On the Mac, open up GarageBand. Select "iPhone Ringtone" as the project type, and click "Choose."
Enter the name of your ringtone and the other parameters it asks you to enter, or just keep them as the defaults. Finally, press "Create."
The GarageBand window will open. The first thing you might want to do is to delete the default track, which just has a sample ringtone.
You can paste in an MP3, or the song of your choice. What I usually do is to find the sound file on my computer in Finder, select it and copy, then in the GarageBand window select paste. The song will be imported. YOu can also drag and drop the file.
Now in the LCD section, it might be easier to select "time" as the mode, so that you can see the length of your ringtone. For me, it was selected by default, but if not, then select that mode in the LCD section.
You will also want to select "cycle region." Again for me it was already selected.
This will give you a bar that distinguishes the part of your track that will become the ringtone. Drag it to the proper area, extend it to the length you like (no more than 40 seconds), and hit "play" to listen to the result.
Make any adjustments. Once you are happy, then go to Share -> Send Ringtone to iTunes. It will convert it to a .m4r file and will put it in your iTunes library.
Sync your iPhone, and you will find your ringtone on your iPhone, which you can now select.

Re: Making Ringtones for iPhone
This makes me wish I had a Mac computer instead of a Windows PC! Is GarageBand a software program that can only be downloaded onto a Mac computer?

Re: Making Ringtones for iPhone
GarageBand is an application that comes by default on the Mac. Unfortunately it is not available for Windows.
However, I found a guide online for creating ringtones on Windows using iTunes. It's more tedious than the GarageBand method, but it still works.
I found a guide online, but I cannot post links yet.
But essentially it went like this:
- Find a song in iTunes that you want to convert
- Right click and select "Get info."
- Under options, select the start and stop time. It should be about 30-40 seconds.
- Right click the song again and click "convert to AAC." If AAC is not available, you'll have to change your import options to enable AAC under preferences.
- Find the song in your iTunes library, and copy it to another folder. It should have the extension .m4a. Rename it with the new extension .m4r (r is for ringtone), replacing the m4a. So if it is named song.m4a, rename it to song.m4r
- Open the song in iTunes now, and it'll be placed under ringtones.
I hope this helps.

Re: Making Ringtones for iPhone
Hey there ...
Step 1.
Open iTunes on your computer and find a song that you want to snip. We are going to be taking a 30 second clip (max for ringtone is 30s), so make sure to select a song with a catchy chorus or some type of melody that would make a good ringtone.
Step 2.
Right-click on the song and select ‘Get Info” followed by the “Options”. In the Options tab, you will see Start and Stop. Here is where you will enter your start and stop time for the ringtone. You may need to listen to the song a few times to take note of exactly when to start and stop your clip.
When you are done with your timing, press OK.
Step 3.
Create an AAC version of your song by right-clicking and selecting Create AAC Version. You will have the original and the AAC version in your library now. I would suggest changing the title of the AAC version to make identifying it easier.
Now that we have the original and the AAC version, you can change the original song back to its regular start and stop time. Just uncheck the boxes next to Start and Stop.
Note, if you see an error you have an older song that was formatted differently
From iTunes Support: “Older purchased songs are encoded using a Protected AAC format that prevents them from being converted. If you need to convert these to another format, follow the instructions in this article to upgrade them.”
Follow the steps laid out in that article or pick a more recent song; 2010 or later.
Step 4.
Right-click on your new AAC song clip and select Show in Finder. From the Finder folder, right-click your newly created song and select Get Info.
Step 5.
In the Get Info menu, under “Name and Extension”, change the extension for .m4a to .m4r and save your changes.
once saved, drag the file from the folder to your desktop.
Step 6.
Connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes. Select the three dots next to your phone and click Tones in the drop-down menu.
Step 7.
Drag the tone from the desktop to the Tones section.
Step 8.
Click on the iPhone icon and go to Tones -> Sync Tones -> Selected Tones -> and select your tone and sync your device.
Step 8.
Click on the iPhone icon and go to Tones -> Sync Tones -> Selected Tones -> and select your tone and sync your device.
