Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

I'm more of a bottom-line kind of guy. I carried asurian insurance for several years. I recently used their service to replace a damaged phone. They sent out a phone the next day-- yay! Or WAS it yay?

The replacement phone seemed lighter in weight to me. But it was supposed to be the same exact model. I didn't see anything else different about it other than the fact that the label inside specifically declared it to be an Asurian replacement model. Didn't think more of it until a few days later (10 or so, past their 7-day return deali-o) when I realized that the phone reception was greatly diminished with the replacement phone (I had no reception in areas that I always had reception before). And reprogramming the phone didn't help, either. Also, I could hardly hear the ringer or feel the buzzer.

My opinion is that I was sent an inferior phone that doesn't work as well as my previous phone. In fact, I found it barely useable. So, as a bottom-line kind of guy, I realized that I paid out a whole bunch of money for no benefit to me. I cancelled my Asurion insurance immediately and have never looked back. I do NOT recommend Asurian insurance, as I found that it would have been cheaper just to buy a new phone when I needed it. Plus, I would have been happier that way anyway.

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

If my phone has movable parts (flip, slide keyboard, etc), has a retail value of $400+, or is a series phone (Blackberries, Palms, EnVs, etc) then I'm definitely getting insurance.

$7 Total Equipment Protection (Asurion, Sprint) over the course of 22 months (standard upgrade time frame) comes out to $154+$50 deduct comes out to around $200. Phones with movable parts are likely to run into problems, and if the retail value of a phone is commonly around $400+, then I really don't want to have to worry about the outcome of an unlucky drop to ground ending its' career. Also, with a series phone, if you wait around a year (depending on when you purchased your phone in relation to when it debuted) you're likely to get an upgraded model, especially if you're a smooth talker with the Asurion representative. In 2007 I went straight from a Treo 650 to a Treo 750p via Asurion.

Sidenote: Best Buy's relatively new Best Buy Mobile department seems to be making a lot of smart moves in the cellular world such as abolishing mail-in rebates, having a free text notification as to when you're eligible for a phone, free data transfers, and now offering their own insurance. Their insurance costs $9.99 a month, however, they never charge any deductibles, often replace your phone right in the store (no need to wait for snail mail) and if they cannot replace your phone in the store, they have loaner phones to get you by meanwhile.

Neither insurance in my opinion is a ripoff. New phones aren't cheap and to receive complete coverage for $7/month and a $50 deduct for something that is 100% portable and travels with you constantly is not a ripoff, especially considering the retail value of phones. Here are a couple of examples of retail buy-out prices: HTC Hero = $600, Blackberry Curve = $750, Palm Pre = $700, even most free phones range from $250-$350.

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

    Right on!
    IN A NUTSHELL:

Asurion charges absurd deductibles for refurb phones! They try to send you a phone that's less than half the retail value of what you insured! They try to tell you it is a "new" phone but it isn't! And if they have their way they won't even send you a charger! I am sick of organized corporate fraud and I don't think anybody should take it lying down. Read on for my story & please respond with your thoughts.

Asurion tried to charge an $85 dollar deductible when I called for a replacement for my water-damaged MetroPCS Samsung SCH-A870. Asurion told me I'd need to keep the charger to my old phone. I said I'd like a charger also with my replacement phone. (In addition to the water damage, the charger pins were slightly bent on the charger & my old phone & it didn't charge unless I jiggled it into place.) The MetroPCS rep in the walk-in store told me I would have to pay only a $50 deductible when I asked.

I paid $4 a month into that insurance for 28 months. When I bought my Samsung phone in August of 2007, I paid about $119 for it, and expected that with MetroGuard my insurance would at least purchase something of comparable value. Furthermore, my phone is discontinued. So I knew that when he said he was going to send me a phone without a charger, it was a refurb phone. This model phone can easily be had as refurb out on the open market for $52. I've seen it for as little as $20.

I don't care if I get it the very next day. I want a new phone and a charger from MetroPCS with a fair retail value of $119. If I don't get it, MetroPCS won't get another thin dime from my pocket in my lifetime.

    Total Asurion wants: $85 deductible + $112 already paid in = $197
Total Value Asurion delivers: $52 + $25 handling (and this is being charitible since its probably a phone they got for next to nothing from the MetroPCS recycle program...)
    RIPOFF AMOUNT: $120

I could have easily bought three of these phones for what they want and had them express shipped. Don't ever buy this insurance. Cut your losses and don't accept the replacement phone if you have to pay a deductible on a refurb phone. A reasonable layperson would assume that for property insurance or replacement/warranty, the value you insure is equal, or at least comparable, to the value of the compensation.

Asurion's website has nothing but 4 and 5 star reviews, and I would bet $$ that anyone on this forum that defends this kind of unethical business practice is either an employee or a paid shill.

Any lawyers out there? A class action against Asurion & possibly several major carriers could make millions in punitive because this crap has probably already happened to thousands of people. I am curious as to what my legal options are and what tack any possible litigation could take. I'm so incensed about this and other corporate ripoffs that are perpetrated everyday that I want to contact a legal professional and to help others participate in a class-action lawsuit in my market area. Major cellphone carriers should have a strong disincentive from letting third-party insurers perpetrate fraud on their customers.

Not a lawyer, but here are your legal options:

    • Discontinue the service.
    • Continue with the service

Asurion is an OPTIONAL service. You choose to have insurance...no one forced you. Asurion is not the best company be they sure do beat not having a phone at all.

Yes, they do send refurbs. You say they attempt to hide that they're refurbs...well they don't hide it well when there is a sticker under the battery that says "Certified Asurion Refurbished Device".

Yes, deductibles have increased...like anything else in this world. So has the monthly coverage premiums. What service stays the same price for 5 years straight? Asurion. Until recently, their prices didn't change in quite a while.

I do not like the customer service as you go through an automated system that is pretty lengthy. Just press 0 and you do eventually get a person.

IN ALL OF MY EXPERIENCE, Asurion is the best choice for insurance on a wireless device. I pay $5.99 per month (even though I have the droid, an advanced device which is supposed to be $7.99 per month) this includes the extended warranty, and I have a $79 deductible. REASONABLE for a $569.00 phone. I also have WPP Insurance from Asurion on my NETBOOK for $6.00 per month with an $89.00 deductible...WHAT A VALUE!

If you're not interested in Asurion, check in on another third party company such as Safeware (Laptop, Desktop, Tablet PC and PDA/Smartphone insurance from Safeware Insurance Agency, Inc.). They provide insurance for wireless devices and charge you based on the value of the device. They have plans with and without deductibles. They cover other household electronics too.

Sure, nobody forces you (yet) to insure your health or your property (well, you are if you owe the bank or under certain commercial contracts), but there’s a whole industry based on convincing you that you’re foolish not to. And personally, I'd rather use smoke signals than let anyone steal from my pocket.

The MetroPCS sales rep made it seem like an intelligent choice to insure my new property. If I pay for a service, I expect to receive the service. Look on the MetroPCS website about MetroGuard Handset Insurance right now. Follow the link to Asurion’s website. You won’t find a peep about refurbished phones on either one. It shows that MetroPCS, at the very least, did not exercise due diligence in making sure that their customers were not defrauded by a third-party insurance company, and at the most, they are complicit.

Moreover, if the current market value of the replacement phone, regardless of whether it is used or new, plus shipping, is less than the deductible, the customer should not have to pay the full deductible! A deductible is just that… deducted from the value of the replacement phone. Why should I pay you the full $85 to get a replacement if the retail value of the phone you send, plus shipping & handling, is far less than $85? You can’t call it a deductible if you’re just charging it as a flat fee and not deducting it from the value of the phone!!!! The value of what was insured should be equal or comparable to the value of the compensation!

If the phone is discontinued and no longer sold new by MetroPCS, the customer should be given a choice as to what they can do instead. They should not be pushed into a (ripoff ) refurb phone from Asurion when they have no guarantee it will function just as well as their old phone (and was very likely pulled from what amounts to a refuse bin)! If this is beyond the scope of what an ordinary customer service rep can do, the customer should be handed to a supervisor who can satisfy their concerns and not just be told “Sorry!” The amount of money over time that the loyal MetroPCS customer has already paid into the system should also be taken into account. Also, if I were Samsung, I would be pissed that my customers were being unwittingly pushed into aftermarket stuff instead of being upgraded to my hot new products.

The level of service the customer will receive is misrepresented. I seriously doubt whether the MetroGuard service should even be called insurance or protection because it appears that isn’t what is really going on at all. The customer should know that this replacement will most likely be a refurb before the contract is even signed, and they should be able to choose at signing to have an option to choose a higher level of service and receive a brand new phone (even for an additional fee), and be able to decline express or overnight shipping in the favor of more economical ground shipping.

Also, have you ever wondered what happens to all the phones you give to MetroPCS for “recycling” or to the phones that you send Asurion when you get your replacement (under the pain of a $300 fine if you don’t?) There is a hot market for refurbed phones and the parts that go into refurb phones in Asia…where Asurion boasts that they have several offices on their website. People who have very popular phones like the Blackberry or the Droid will be treated very favorably by companies like Asurion. Why? Any number of third party companies will hover like a vulture so that one day they can get the damaged corpse of one of these phones and part it out. They will reap huge profits in Asia, and they will make money even on water damaged phones. Think I'm full of it? Do a little Googling. A very popular tech magazine has at least one article written about this aftermarket phenomenon.

I may or may not achieve an amicable remedy with MetroPCS corporate or Asurion corporate, but my individual resolution, favorable or not, does not affect the issue at hand. This should never have happened in the first place. In all of this mess, Asurion and/or the cell phone carrier is likely to have done something they really shouldn’t have under US law. No company should be able to rack up screwed customers like McDonald's racks up hamburgers served. For every one person that writes about it on a forum, 100 don't.

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

I took a bit of investigating into my hands.

I called Asurion, entered my mobile number, and easily pressed 0 to get to someone. I asked them if I needed my phone replaced, would it be new, used, or refurbished. It may seem that there isn't a difference between used and refurbed...but there are. Used simply means it was used and then put back on the market. Refurb means it has been factory reset, new upgrades installed, and all errors with the phone are fixed. They bluntly told me that it is a "like-new replacement". Like-new is a common term they use to say refurbished. What is "like-new" unless it is a refurbished device? Nothing. I called again and received the EXACT same response.

If you clearly read the Asurion terms and conditions it states:

A replacement shall be made in the form of a device of equal or lesser value and of a different make or model than the original, if the original is unavailable. If the original is unavailable, but becomes available within 60 days, the customer reserves the right to request that original device.
Also, I can tell you that if you were to walk-in to the MetroPCS store, you will most likely not find YOUR phone for $85. It probably was never below $85 when it was available. MetroPCS sells their phones at full retail value (because you are not locked into an agreement). Asurion isn't going by what you can buy off of eBay. They're going by how nice your phone is. If you view here, choose your state and then click go. They have a variety of deductibles (as low as $35) for a variety of phones.

The customer should not be given the exclusive right to choose the option if their phone is unavailable. Asurion's job is to provide you with a device of equal or lesser value just to give you a phone until you're able to upgrade or purchase a new one. Since MetroPCS doesn't offer the ability to upgrade, you're in more of a rut that someone with Verizon would be.

Working for Verizon for several years as a tier II supervisor (I work somewhere similar now), I've seen EXACTLY what is done. All carriers do it exactly the same...it's the law...so things don't vary from carrier to carrier so much in this sense. When a customer purchases a phone and returns it within the 15-30 day trial period for a refund, that becomes a refurbished device. Asurion actually gets most of their phones right from the wireless carrier and about 80% of the ones they give out are brand new and out of the box.

OK, you tell me, when you open a phone from its box, is it still brand new? NO. When you open it it is no longer brand new. Asurion isn't going to give someone with a used phone a brand new phone...

Also, it isn't breaking any laws whenever they have a detailed terms and conditions page that many customers fail to read. Also, Asurion is not bound to you in any way because you have a non-contract company.

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

i understand deductables and such, but i have to agree. ive never worked with a insurance company...wait let me change that. any Company of any kind as bad as insurion. i first tried their online service, which ended up not working. i then called to make a claim. they told me i would receive a call within 24 hours. never happened. 3 days later i called and asked what happened. they sent me to the person that was supposed to call me right away. the call took 20 seconds. then after being approved, they told me that since i wasnt called earlier, my phone wasnt in stock and it could take up to a week to get in and that i would be called when it arrived. 9 days later i called and what do ya know, the phone was in stock. so after doing their job by calling them TWICE and paying the 130 deductable (no problem with the price) and 12 days later, my phone was on its way. i will NEVER go through them again.

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

Asurion is a horrible company. They are nothing but thieves and rip off artists.

I paid $6 a month for a service plan and the sales rep never told me that there was a deductible. Yeah.... a deductible!

$130 for a phone which cost me $120 new. Plus I paid out $6 each month for 2 years. That's another $144 bucks!

The owners of this company should be keel hauled, then have their bank accounts drained and given back to all the people they ripped off.

    1) Cost of Asurion insurance.....$5.00 a month.

    2) If you make a claim they make you pay $50.00

    3) Once you do a claim and you get a new phone you must send back your old phone (with the battery) within 15 days or they can charge you up to $300.00.

    4) The customer service sucks.

Now let me explain this better for you.....lets say your cell phone craps out 14 months into your plan...14 months x $5.00 a month equals...$70.00. Now $70.00 plus the $50.00 fee they charge you equals $120.00. Thats almost as much as a new phone already. But wait.....

Dont forget you gotta send your old broken phone back in with the battery...It does not take a moron to realized that they refurbish the old phones and put new cheap plastic housings on the phones and resell em. Probably the batteries too. How much do ya think the old cell phone is worth to the refurbish company....? $15, $25?, $40? While they resell it for probably at least $90 to $175. Which you originally paid $150.00 for.

Oh and dont forget to send in that old phone, if you dont, thats an extra $300.00

And lastly, the customer service sucks.....Oh the reps you talk to are very nice dont get me wrong, but I was disconnected once, put on hold several times....Told the wrong information.....(Guy told me that the $50.00 went towards extra months on your Asurion insurance plan, next person I talked to said that was not true and it was just a service fee)

So all and all you end up paying about $150.00 for your new phone, while they turn around fix the old one and resell your phone as a new or refurbished one (I am only guessing about this but is probably the case).....If your phone does not break for longer....You end up paying even more. Worst case scenario you forget to send in your broken phone and could end up paying like $450.00.

The only good things about this service is that you pay no shipping costs, Or did I? and I got a new phone by the next day.

I thought insurance was supposed to help your wallet, not not burn a hole in it. Its an Assurance, that you'll be getting scammed with Asurion insurance.

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

I've had Verizon for many years and never file an Insurance claim. This week has been horrible for me since I left my phone on top of my car and was taken by someone. I filed a claim and I was surprissed how the process took less than 1 day, the next day I got home for lunch and at that same time UPS was delivering my phone. I got new phone, charger, card I was so happy. My happiness didn't last long, today I went to the bank and I put my phone on the counter to get some documents, I got distracted for a minute since my friend was doing another transaction with another banker, as soon as I walk away I was the last customer at the bank it was the closing time. I realized I had left my phone on the counter, I went back and they said noone found my blackberry. Funny because I got a call while I was at the counter so I'm sure I left it there. Bottom line I had to file another claim today and fax some extra documents they required, I assume since I'm filing 2 claims in less than 4 days. The beauty of having an insurance, I didn't have to buy 2 blackberries in a week???? I would've been really pissed and broken. Just had to pay refundable and my phone is coming tomorrow. So I'm defenitely happy with the service Asurion provides.

    Just my personal experience,

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

    Be careful with Asurion!

We have been covered by Asurion for 2 years now. Our phones are of that age as well.

My daughter started having problems with her phone in May. We had it replaced by Asurion and everything went very well.

Her phone died in December. It was a Motorola which is known to have its screen go gray. Hers did and the only way to reset it was to take the battery out. The problem promptly reoccurred. We contacted Asurion and they replaced the phone again - no problem.

However, yesterday, I received a letter from Asurion saying they were dropping my daughter because we had filed 2 claims in a one-year period with them.

What is the point of having insurance if when you need them, they drop you. That is what we pay the premiums for.

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

They sent me a Motorola phone that had been RETURNED 11 TIMES PRIOR TO ME!!! I called them and said the phone had been malfunctioning after I filed a claim online and two days later they did nothing. The phone had been cutting off for a month for no reason. An hour after I filed the report I took the battery out to reset the phone and the clip that held the back on went flying throug the air! The lady I spoke to on the phone said I had to pay the $50 again because I broke it. I said it had been malunctioning for a month and it broke because it was already refurbishied and not because I did anything to it. ASURION REFUSED TO REPLACE IT AND I LAID INTO THAT THEIF ON THE PHONE TOO!

I then went to VERIZON and made them call and say send me a new phone! The lady at Verizon said they were to inspect if first. They looked and the indicator had shown WATER DAMAGE. I said it has never been near water. She said it is ok. I RAN THE SERIAL NUMBER AND THEY HAVE SENT THAT PHONE OUT 12 TIMES ALREADY!!! So I find out they sent me an already water damaged phone and they have sent it out to 11 other people. ASURION ordered me to pay $50 on top of the $7 a month to replace a phone that had been replaced 11 other times...

    12 times my(hehe) This phone serial #DEC 268435456306272700 MODEL VX-8700

If they send it out 12 times and they get just 50% to return it and pay $50 that is $600
then you say they only had insurance 1 year *12 peeps * $84 year - $1008

That is a total of $1608 of of one phone! That is only if 50% and 1 yr...I LOW BALLED IT!

THEY ARE CROCKS AND THIS IS AS BAD AS THAT OCEAN FRONT PROPERTY IN ARIZONA I BOUGHT!

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

I stumbled across this site this weekend after I had contacted T-mobile after loosing my Blackberry 8520 on Fri. night. I was unaware that they outsourced their insurance claims to another company, which happened to be Asurion. So I placed my claim with Asurion on Sat. evening around 6PM and it took relatively no time at all and the representative was very kind and made the process painless. So then feeling good about the situation I happened to google "Asurion Insurance Reviews" and stumbled across this site. I spent countless hours reading through this whole topic and everyone's horror stories, and became quite skeptical that I would receive a refurb'd P.O.S. So therefore today Tues., my package arrives from Asurion and I open it expecting the worst, that was not the case. I had received a brand new unopened Blackberry just like the one I lost a few days before. Considering I had only purchased the new phone 4 days before loosing it....go figure....the phone I had received was in the exact same packaging and came with all the accessories that I had received new a few days prior when I purchased the phone from T-Mobile. So in short, I could not be happier with the service and product I have received from Asurion.
