Haha, we're bigger than Dawson Creek tho ! Mind you, it has gotten a LOT better in the past few years, Superstore and Wal-Mart opening and all. I do love living here, but for certain things, one must travel once in a while.

Ummmmm, not really. If something comes over the border, we pay duty on it. Duty = GST. However, it's finding a company that will ship to me without an arm and a leg, or ship to me at all. Most U.S. companies won't even ship to Canada, and if they do, there's some rediculous flat fee, plus customs brokerage, plus handling, blah bah blah. So it's not the government who's screwing us, it's the companies in the U.S. and the fright companies, also out of the U.S. Oh, and when I actually look and see how much the actual base rate for freight is, I see that the companies are making money by marking up shipping costs. Nice way to retail, make the product cheap and the mandatory extra charges more expensive than they cost to make up the retail price difference. Great business practice

And no, Christmas presents don't get taxed. Don't know where you heard that from ? We actually get excellent benefits and tax deduction options, I find we do pretty well here in Canada.

Oh, and when I buy online, I try to buy from a Canadian company. Aside from supporting our own economy, Canadian companies normally don't rape on shipping charges to make a few extra dollars.

    Re: Anchorage, Alaska

I sent my friend a christmas present last year, he had to pay 227 CAD on duty's on it :-P Even though it was a gift. Was wrapped up all nice and everything. By Christmas presents I meant international, IE present from your cousin living in Ohio etc..
Also, fedex charges me $100US to ship a cellphone to canada, though I am not in the US right now, but ontop of that 100, there is a 15% fuel surcharge fee, mandatory. Then Canada smacked down a $60 duty ontop of that for my friend on another forum.
Needless to say I don't use Fedex anymore.

When I was working in retail a while back,we had the worst trouble with shipping to Canada, NOTHING was delivered on time, and a lot of complaints from customers, the solution? We had to ship priority and overnight everything to make sure it was in the customers hands within 2 weeks. Then there is always the fight to reclaim insurance if something gets lost, or damaged.

This might be the type of thing that discourages US companies from shipping to canada. Most US companies rely on UPS/FEDEX. Which can have mixed reviews...
Now I use Canada Air, USPS, Japan Post, and a few logistics companies for Canadian sales.. just the Canadian customer has to realise, they might not get it just within the quoted time.. Even Canada's Post office could be a few weeks late.

Maybe there is some new way of shipping between US-CA that a lot of us don't know about yet, but I just know for myself, I am much more relaxed shipping from JP to US then from US to CA.. But JP to CA is a little bit easier for me, for some reason..

On a side note, the BIG US companies rape everyone on shipping, it is the American way afterall.

    Re: Anchorage, Alaska

FedEx is the one charging the $100 shipping + fuel surcharge though, not the Canadian Government.

And how much was the cell phone worth ? 7% GST is added to all items crossing over, when they're over a certain amount, gift or non-gift. The problem with the gift thing is, just about everyone in the past was using "gift" to avoid these taxes, even when it was a retail item. eBay really ruined it, since sellers would mark EVERYTHING as gift. Therefore, now everything gets charged 7% GST tax, however, the seller can pay it should they wish to, at time of shipping.

Best way to ship is USPS. USPS has the best rates, best delivery, and best overall experience. At our store here, we ship with Purolator and Canada Post, and we've NEVER had a package go missing as of yet. On the other side, I know of some stores / businesses who always have items go missing in shipment. However, when I've seen how they package / label stuff, it's no wonder the packages never reach their destination. I'm good at packing and labeling, and my shipments have never not reached their destination.

None the less, to get away from the shipping topic, I'm booking my holidays off work next week

Indeed, that's what I've read as well. It's more that I've never been there, that excites me. I've been to every major city in Canada, been up and down the east and west coasts of the USA, been to Cuba, Switzerland, Poland, blah blah blah. Basically, I'd like to go somewhere I haven't seen yet, and in this case, that means Alaska
