I am going to have my name and e-mail address plus business phone number engraved on my phone and my digital camera. It is just too easy to maybe leave one of these things or drop it somewhere unknown until it is too late. Sure, people might keep it, but most people are basically honest and will respond to a phone number or e-mail to report a lost item, even get a reward.
Have any of you had experience with losing a phone? Do you think engraving is a good idea?

Re: Have Your Name Engraved On Your Phone?
hmm... NEVER heard of that. The person could replace the housing of the phone you know...

Re: Have Your Name Engraved On Your Phone?
Except if it is a phone that is almost impossible to get a housing for..
a lot of the high end phones don't have much available for replacement housings. But if you implimented a pinlock on phones with no manual (software only) reset this would work.
There are some other options, but they probably require too much work for some people.

Re: Have Your Name Engraved On Your Phone?
It's a RAZR V3. The main reason to have the engraving done is to make it easy for someone to return it. I think a lot of people would be glad to have the info to make it easy to return. If it falls into the hands of the unscrupulous, they're not going to return it anyway.

Re: Have Your Name Engraved On Your Phone?
Maybe it's pointless. Only time will tell if it ever pays off as cheap insurance. I only cost $10 each to have my phone and digital camera engraved with a cool 'asthetically pleasing' name, phone# at work and e-mail address. I scanned the phone and used that image to create type in Photoshop on a layer over the image to position and create type on a path in a semi-circle over the smaller lines of info under my name. Exported that to a DXF format file, burnt to CD, that the laser engraver read into his system to put the image exactly as I had designed it on the phone and camera. Only took him less than an hour as I went out and got a hamburger and walked my dogs while it was being done.
Quite nice actually, and like I said, now we'll see if it ever becomes what caused my phone or camera to find me someday.

Re: Have Your Name Engraved On Your Phone?
testiclease: I find your reply "pointless".
Ken has a good idea here. There is nothing wrong with engraving your handset. Yes, someone may steal it, yes, someone may try to sell it, blah blah blah. But if the person is honest, at least they will know who the handset belongs to. And if the SIM card were missing somehow or damaged, then there would be no way to trace you as being the real owner of the phone. This way, at least it's physically marked on the handset.

Re: Have Your Name Engraved On Your Phone?
yeah, i know cingular offers that feature. i think people would be less likely to steal/not return a phone with another person's information engraved all over it. other people around them would question your name on their phone... however, most people today aren't honest at all and would keep the phone regardless.

So I took the ESN, went back to work, looked up who's phone it was, called them and let them know that their phone was being kept at such and such post office as it was left on their counter. The customer thanked me and said he had been looking for it and didn't know where he had put it.
If I wouldn't regularly go to that particular post office, the employees would have had no idea how to locate the owner of the phone. It probably would have sat in a drawer, never to be picked up and never to be used again.
Hence why I think engraving is a perfectly fine idea. If the above mentioned handset was engraved, the employees could simply have called the person and let them know that they left their phone in their store.
So, anyone still think it's "pointless" ?

Re: Have Your Name Engraved On Your Phone?
i think it's a little pointless because a car dealership or wherever you leave your phone can just look in your address book for "home" and call there to leave a message that they have your phone. i wouldn't want my phone engraved, even though cingular offers the service, be careful, it may void the warranty on the phone. if you have to get a replacement phone through the warranty service be prepared that you won't get an engraved one back and you'll have to pay extra again.

paulcman: I'm in the same boat, I wouldn't want my handset engraved either, for business reasons.

Re: Have Your Name Engraved On Your Phone?
ESN? What is an ESN? A (whatever that word is... like NASA, each letter stands for a certain word). Or is it some service? Jus curious.

the phone would become undetectable to the service providers network
