Is it really important to download special tunes/tones for your phone, having a few options that come with the phone aren't enough.

Re: Why Do People Find It Important To Have Special Ring Tones?
LG put a bunch of really crappy ringtones on my phone and I hate them all. Well, except for their rendition of Badinerie which is kinda cool. So, that's the first reason for me to get some custom ringtones, so I don't have to hear the crap LG put on my phone. The second reason would be that I like to know who's calling before I look at the caller id, and I have a ringtone assigned to my boss and all coworkers (the 'work' ring), I have one assigned to all my clientele so I know if I need to quickly get to a quieter room, I have one assigned for my home number, I have one assigned to someone who annoys the crap out of me so I know I don't have to break my neck getting to the phone when it rings a certain way. There are a few others, but for the most part, that's it.

Re: Why Do People Find It Important To Have Special Ring Tones?
I understand the use of special ring tones to ID certain callers without looking at your phone, I guess my post is pointed more towards spending money on all the download tunes available just to ring your phone. Since purchasing my new razr... so of the things that are available for download is crazy, Im mean TV shows, news cast, where are people living that they have to watch a one inch screen, is the repeat of a TV show or news cast that important.
It seems like the last and least important thing to have a phone for is... a phone call. Now I understand that most of the extra features are probably used and target towards people less than 35 years of age, the phone market exploded after making wireless kid (UNDER 20 YEARS OLD) friendly. JMO

^^^ Excellent point! I see what you mean, like being in the grocery store and you think someone's playing a radio because of all the people who want the newest hot ringtone every week and half the time they just let it play and take their time answering because they think they look really cool. Yeah, I don't care what anyone else thinks of my ringtones, I just want my phone to be personalized to 'me', and I'm not going to let it ring just to hear the song, lol.

When I went to the verizon website and check out what the v-cast was, I couldn't believe what's available for download or options for purchase.

As for being important... I suppose for those few numbers that you don't wish to miss a call from, it can be, so why not add a distintive ringtone to them? A personal example being, I have a few friends/family members that if their calling, me on my cell phone, their calling me because something is wrong, so I'd want to answer that call no matter what else I was doing. And the default tones (especially while sleeping), are not attention grabbing enough, (for me anyway).
But the good thing is I don't have any ringtones that go one for more than the normal time limit of the phone's ring before VM pickup, so as not to freak out the old ladies squeezing melons in the produce section!

Re: Why Do People Find It Important To Have Special Ring Tones?
I made a couple of really loud ones because I work in a noisy environment, (driving a loud diesel truck) and I need to be able to hear when my phone is ringing. Mainly, the ones I use are the intro to the theme song from the Xbox game Halo 2, and a clip from Franz Ferdinand's The Fallen. I also have a version of the mosquito ringtone that I made with Sony Sound Forge, which, unbelievably enough, I can hear in the truck as well. Other than that, I would really have no reason to use custom ringtones.
