Does anyone know that person who talks on a cell phone, just to use a cell phone, someone who can talk or has to talk, no matter where or what their doing. HERE'S THE STUDY BELOW, DOES THIS APPLY TO ANYONE YOU KNOW.
I firmly believe that cell-phone use, as with anything that's a behavior in life, can turn into an addiction, and the way I would define addiction in a clinical sense is any behavior in which a person becomes dependent to the detriment of an important part of their lives, said Christopher Knippers, who holds a doctorate in clinical psychology and is an assessment specialist at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Re: The New Drug...cell Phone Addiction
I'm not sure I buy into that. Some people feel the need to talk to people constantly (think teenage girls, for example), but that isn't new with the development of cell phones. Communication is just more accessible now.

Re: The New Drug...cell Phone Addiction
There are many people today whose cell phone is a life line to there job or business, when I was a operations manager in 1988 my cell phone bill was sometimes 1000-1500 a month (company paid) because I was on the phone through out the day. In today's world how many people are on cell phones all day long and say nothing...(laughing).
The cell phone has become a big part in this fast pace world of computers, satellites, credit cards, the cell phone has played a big role in bringing all the hi-tech stuff together and has taken advantage of incorporating the uses of these technologies into the wireless world. Where will we be five years from today?

Re: The New Drug...cell Phone Addiction
I completely agree with you. Cell phones have become a necessity to the business world because it helps companies be more efficient. I can't imagine technology will have extreme changes in the next 5 years, but I don't think it would be a stretch to say that cell phones could be central devices that control remote controls, garage doors, etc in the near future (20 years or so). That doesn't mean that they're addictive. People used to say the same thing about internet access. I definitely used to fit into the "internet addict" category, but the "fear" that your article describes probably falls closer to boredom and not knowing what to do about it.

Re: The New Drug...cell Phone Addiction
I know your only using words, but its not my article, I only post news articles for conversational purposes. I think there were allot of... and probably still some Internet junkies that just surf the web endlessly, but as a whole I think when gadgets come out we tend to use them to death and then tapers off with time.

Re: The New Drug...cell Phone Addiction
Yeah, maybe. I think the cell phone will be a necessary device for business for a long time. That's why I think that it will become incorporated with other common products. As for addiction...I think that's extreme. I would call it a business necessity, not a personal addiction.

Re: The New Drug...cell Phone Addiction
I agree on a basic level that some people do feel a need to simply "use" their cell phone because they can. I do not believe that anyone can be truly "addicted" to cell phone use, because there is no inherent danger in using a phone. Whereas drugs and alcohol can have life threatening effects (overdose, liver damage, etc.), the only "negative" effect of cell phone over-use is possibly annoying the hell out of other people in your proximity (this can have life threatening effects, but that's a different story).
My favorite thing to do is watch people (mostly young African-American women; no offense intended, it's just been my observation) holding cell phones to their ears for hours at a time, never saying a single word into the mouthpiece. I just don't understand the appeal, or need to do that.LG VX9900 (enV)

Re: The New Drug...cell Phone Addiction
At one time I thought the same way, after using my Bluetooth earpiece, I can't see why anyone would want to hold a phone in his or her hand up against his or her ear. When Im at home I leave my cell phone at my desk... if it rings, I just pick up the earpiece and answer, my cell phone stays in my nylon pouch and Im able to move about hands free.

Re: The New Drug...cell Phone Addiction
I think that before, when most people stayed either at home or work, there was no need to use a phone, other than one sitting on a desk.
Now that people are moving around a lot more, work, school, errands, commuting, the need to be able to use a phone to firm up or change plans, while on the move helps many people a lot more than, pulling off the road to search for a pay phone.
Granted there are many people that use a cell phone the same way they would use a land line to "chit chat". Personally I can't see "chit chatting" on a land line much less a cell phone. I would think that there are many more people that use their cell phones to keep in touch with work, school and transportation issues than just blathering on about nothing. Of course you can't count teens in that or the people that are always shocked that their phone bills are $100+ over their limits every month.
