Re: Cell phone use in Europe

Hey long time lurker, thought I'd make a post about something I know.

Your current phone might not even work in Europe, if you have Verizon it won't because they use CDMA, and Europe is mostly on the GSM standard. Even if your phone does work in Europe it's going to be something really expensive to use, like at least a dollar a minute.

My advice would be to first find out if your phone is tri band, or quad band (and/or if it's GSM). If it is, see about unlocking it (there's threads on one of the sub forums here about that). From there you could do what I did which is go to onesimcard.com and get a prepaid SIM card from them. For me personally I bought a phone from them since I use verizon. The advantage of that is it's prepaid, and you know it's going to work no matter where in Europe. I just wanted something in case of emergency and a few quick calls, so I wasn't super concerned with the cost. Getting a SIM card in Europe might be cheaper, but I've heard of people having issues getting it to work and stuff. Also, if you're going to several countries, it might not work in different places. I was visiting several countries, so it was an issue for me. Basically I just didn't want to deal with finding a SIM card over there and trying to get it to work.

Anyway, in short, check out onesimcard.com and get a SIM card or phone from them. It's cheaper than trying to use your domestic provider in Europe, and will work for sure. Hope this helps.
