My, Its a good job everybody's faveorite blue turnip sent me here

Ok, since most of you know I work in a printer shop I'll give you all the pro's, cons and etcs about all the different makes I can think of

    HP

Mixed signals about those really. A HP printer is with no doubt in my mind a good printer, they are relyable, practically indestructable they also have HP'S distinct front-loading mechanisum.

A HP is definatly the best for a heavy-duty user or for someone who uses the printer once every 6 months. The reason for that being that the Jet-heads are on the cartridge NOT built into the machine so should you happen to pop the heads then all you need to do is put a new cartridge in there and the printer will behave like new and the cartridges hold one hell of alot of ink. you can get 500 pages out of a HP deskjet 660C black cartridge.

HP'S are also pretty fast if you buy a high-end modle, unfortuneatly if you buy a low-end modle such as the 656C then they only do about 4 PPM (Pages per minute) Black and white where as a HP business inkjet will do about 8 PPM colour.

HP do have there let-downs and the main one is price. yes the cartridges hold alot of ink but they cost anything from £23 to £50. they dont have a very wide head so the cartridge has to make quite a few passes to get the print on the page and when that front-loading mechanisum packs up it can be costly to repair if you dont know how to do it your self.

    NEC

NEC arent too bad, there pretty damn fast, the only downside to them is that the head is on the machine, so if you pop the heads then your have to buy a new printer and they are not cheap but the cartridges are not too badly priced.

    IBM

The last IBM i ever delt with was an IBM pro-printer II and we are talking back in 1994 here. so I dont know alot about them now days

    Epson

Argh! an Epson is only good if its 3 or more years old. the new Epson models are really bad. I have gone through 2 Epsons in 6 months.

Epsons do have 3 pluses though. 1, They are cheap. Epson printers now are "expendable" they cost so little. 2, They are normally both USB and LPT1 interface for those computers that either have too many USB'S in use or dont have USB at all. 3, Most epsons are Pretty fast for inkjet printers.

Bad points: As I said, 2 in 6 months with the same problem does not make for good advertiseing. Genuine Epson ink is expensive. £14 for a new T013 (I think) black cartridge and about £16 for a colour...and those fit the CHEAP ones.

Epson ink-jet Nozzels are not up to much. the heads are built into the machine and they do blow very easily meaning more work for the user.

The newer epson printers are cheap to buy but they have a chip in the cartridges so if you try and refill the cartridges your self the chip will still swear blind to the computer that the ink cartridge is empty. allthough Epson are now being made to take those off the market by 2005 as it is not fair trade to the ink companies such as pelican.

    Lexmark/Samsung/Compaq

Bad consumer! buying a lexmark-manufacture printer. yes, its true, all those printer-makes are all acutally just Lexmark machines with different logos on the front. Lexmarks are actually old-design Hewlett Packard (HP) and there is a reason HP got rid of the designs, they are paper-chewing monsters!

whats worse is a lexmark will work with only 1 cartridge and they generally supply the printer with a black ink only (or colour, I am not sure) but which ever one they dont supply it with you can garentee cost about 1/2 the price of the actual printer. dont buy one

    Ollivetti

Buy one of these and I will Hurt you

    Canon

Well canon, what can I say? perhaps I should start with the fadct this new Canon BJ S300 Photo (BJ = Bubble Jet as that is all canon make) is the best. Canons are fast, relyable, cheap and have a good resolution.

the nozzels are not on the cartridge, nor are they on the machine. they are a seperate unit, which makes them easier to maintain. New users GET a Canon! users that need relyability, GET a Canon! Users that need speed GET a canon! seriousley, this one of mine does 8PPM in colour and 14 in black. it printed out a 26 page document in 1 min 30 flat!

Now, breaking down a bit morre Jargon. the "DeskJet, BubbleJet & Inkjet" crap.

DeskJet - HP own the rights to this one. a Desk jet has the nozzels on the cartridge and has the front-loading sheet feeder.

BubbleJet - Canon seem to be the only ones that manufacture these. A bubble jet doesnt work by spraying the ink onto the page, it works by Bubbeling it onto the page by useing Heat. this makes them faster, cheaoer and more relyable.

Inkjet - most manufactures make these. an Inkjet simply works by spraying the ink onto the page. they have the heads on the printer not the cartrige or seperate unit. allthough cheap they can be a pig to maintain.

LazerJet - ugh, who doesnt make a lazer-jet? all they do is user a lazer and POWDER ink along with a heck of a lot of heat. there a bit costly to run so only use one if you mass-produce alot of things. Photocopiers normally use lazer jet printers to out-put the image

thats not allways the most important thing. see, I FIX rpinters and re-fill them so I am going on what I hace picked up over the last year. and also I was going for general makes. not every Canon has complete boarderless printing, Not every HP has 11PPM print speed and every printer is capaebe of photo...well, every printer that is 1440 DPI and above.

    additional Star Micronics

Lets just say this, if you want a printer to last, you need a star. We have a start LC240C dotmatrix* in this house that is 11 years old, is used every day and has NEVER faild, it has never even chewd the paper or ribbon

*Dotmatrix - works kind of like a type-writer. is slow as hell but is Ideal if you print things on carbonised stationary

HP, for a new print-head each time you change a cartridge.

My only gripe is that paper never loads straight in, but HP has a "if it is within X-degrees, it's fine" policy.

nah, printer/copier things arent too great if you leave the lid up and hit "copy" it tends to absorb all the ink
