help?!? resource metering....

Any ideas for me? In the last few weeks I've been getting 'not enough memory to" messages... I've had the computer 3.5 year with no such issues and I'm usually running only trillian and MSIE, a combination which used to be no problem....

question1: How so I remove programs that start automatically with my computer (quicktime is one)

question 2:any ideas what else I can remove or limit? most of the programs running when I ctrl+alt+del are part of the firewall/virus or printer software...

question 3:I've started running the resource meter from time to time... is it possible that the IRC connection I've added to trillian (MBchat) is sucking out the resources?

question 4: Is it just time to get a newer faster computer? I wish I remembered what this one was.... but the fct that I don't even remember what we bought speaks volumes in itself! (pent 600something??, 200something of the faster, less common RAM..... yeesh, I usually have a clue)

Jeanie - try running Dxdiag (Start Menu - Run) It won't answer your questions but it might give you useful info on your system.

Open Start->Run and type in "msconfig". You can de-select Startup items under the Startup tab. But be warned: Do not disable any items you are unsure about. You could prevent your computer from starting up normally.

Trillian consumes about 3.8MB of RAM, about the same as AIM and half as much as Windows Messenger. That should not be enough to slow performance if you have at least 64 Megs of RAM.

First, Right-click on My Computer and select Properties. Tell me how much RAM there is. Then, select the Performance tab and click on Virtual Memory. Select "Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings." If you have very limited hard disk space (<500MB), Virtual Memory may not be as effective. Hard Disk space should never be low enough to effect Virtual Memory allocation. Like Si said, open Direct X Diagnostics by Start>Run and "dxdiag". Report what is told about the Processor.

Is your OS XP? XP is a memory hog, and operates poory under 128MB RAM.
Wait, it appears you have Windows 98 Supplied by Dell. Am I correct?

yes 98...... and whichever of the three memories is the most expensive is the one hubby had to have ... I think its the Virus/firewall software that is hogging my memory, perhaps it was designed for the newer OS's and larger amounts of memory..... the odd thing is.... As I'm watching the resource meter, (System resources, User resources, GDI resources)... the first two will run at about 65% free... I open 10-12 browser windows and it drops condiderable (about 3% a window) but when I close them all it does not rise accordingly.... MIE malfunctioning may be to blame as well.... I really don't want to reload MIE grrr!
