Samsung Galaxy Round Goes Official – Check Out the First Smartphone with a Curved Display

On Monday I've informed you ladies and gents that, according to leaks and rumors, Samsung will unveil the so-called "Galaxy Round" as early as this week. I'm now glad to announce that those rumors were correct, and that the Galaxy Round is now official. In case you're not familiar with the device, the Round is the first smartphone to feature a curved display. This design was possible due to the creation of flexible screens; something that both LG and Samsung have been working on for a very long time.

Well, the Galaxy Round is indeed official, and spec-wise this particular handset sits right at the top. The gadget packs a 5.7 inch "Super Flexible AMOLED" with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 and a pixel density of 386, a Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor running at 2.3 GHz, an Adreno 330 graphics chip, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage expandable by an additional 64 GB with the help of a microSD card slot. The device also features a 13 MP main camera with 2160p @ 30 fps and 1080p @ 60 fps video recording capabilities, and a secondary 2 MP front-facing sensor. The Galaxy Round draws energy from a 2,800 mAh battery, and arrives with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box.



As expected, the latest TouchWiz UI sits on top of the Android OS, bringing a ton of extra features to the table such as Smart Scroll, Smart Pause, Air View, Air Gesture, Samsung Hub, ChatON, Samsung WatchON, S Health, Adaptive Display, Story Album, S Translator and much more. Samsung KNOX is also on-board.

On the face of it, the Galaxy Round seems to be quite similar to the Galaxy Note 3. In fact, both smartphones share many similarities in terms of hardware and software. However, the curved nature of the Round's display has rendered the S Pen rather useless, so the Galaxy Round does not feature a stylus. Evidently, certain software features that go hand-in-hand with the S Pen are also missing. Hopefully, this will also mean that the Round will be retailed at a lower price than the Note 3 is.

All in all, the Samsung Galaxy Round is a pretty impressive device. It boasts flagship-worthy hardware specs, and delivers a fresh, never-before-seen design. It's only a matter of time before other manufacturers will adopt this type of technology, and LG is also said to unveil the "G Flex" very soon.
