Blackberry Storm vs HTC Touch Pro vs Samsung Omnia

For web surfing? I have had a chance to play with the Storm and the web browsing is acceptable but not as good as the iPhone in my opinion.

Anyone used the other 2 and can compare them? Is there a better phone then these 3? Should I just bite the bullet and move to AT&T for the awesomeness that is the iPhone?

    THANKS!

Re: Blackberry Storm vs HTC Touch Pro vs Samsung Omnia

I currently have the omnia, but am thinking about changing it for a storm. I haven't ruled out the touch pro completely though. I have a whole list of perceived pros/cons of the 3 phones, but since you ask about web browsing, I think the touch pro has the slight edge due to its physical keyboard and higher resolution screen. Opera mobile is probably the second-best (or, depends on who you ask, the best) mobile browser behind the iphone's mobile safari. None of the 3 phones AFAIK can play youtube or general flash videos, but opera mobile has support for mobile-enabled flash (I have yet to come across a page with one such applet that I've noticed).

Having played with the BB browser, I don't think it's far behind opera mobile. The dedicated address bar and search keys are helpful, but page rendering in my tests has been about 95% accurate. The larger screen keyboard beats the omnia (since the omnia keys are too small to regularly use in portrait mode), and the capacitive screen is more responsive to on-screen link "clicking" than the resistive screens of the TP and omnia. The blackberry's screen resolution is also nice.

As for the omnia, it has better processor speed and battery life, and runs (almost) the same opera mobile as the touch pro, but it loses significant points on the browsing front due to the keyboard not being too useful in portrait mode, and it doesn't have a pull-out keyboard like the TP. Flipping to landscape mode, the screen resolution is so low that you can barely fit a form input field on the screen above the keyboard.

What???? You can't get on youtube, etc???? I thought you could get on almost everything.......Isn't that why we have to pay the extra 30 or more dollars a month for the web??? And here I thought I found the perfect "other" phone. iphone doesn't have a great camera with flash, and video, can't replace battery, and can't watch live tv on it. This phone you can, yet you can't get on youtube, etc?? Talk about one step forward and two steps back. I feel like I need to take a damned class to figure out what's compatable with what. Your phone can do certain things, but the provider nullifies it for you. pffft.

If you are referring to the HTC Touch Pro then this is unfortunately true but only for Verizon. For some dumb reason Verizon crippled this amazing phone into a piece of crap. They locked the GPS, put less RAM, and put no YouTube application in it. Basically you have to give up every reason that you wanted the TP in the first place. If you run TouchFlo 3D on the phone it eats so much memory that the phone runs slower then a sloth and lags/locks up all the time. Why the hell would they put a cool thing like TouchFlo on the phone if the phone itself can't even handle it? Verizon is full of idiots....seriously.

Alas, I seriously disagree with the suggestions to drop Verizon and go to AT&T or Sprint. Both of these companies have terrible coverage and problems with dropped calls and reception. Verizon is hands down the best coverage on earth and sadly they don't know how to keep phones the way they are. I am thinking of getting either the new Samsung Omnia or Saga considering for ONCE Verizon has left the phones the way they were straight from the Samsung factory. Go with the Saga if you wan't a keyboard and go with the Omnia if you wan't touch screen typing.

Re: Blackberry Storm vs HTC Touch Pro vs Samsung Omnia

Interesting. I love all the posts about the wonder of the iPhone. Yes, the touch interface is revolutionary. But compare it feature to feature, and I'd rather have my Omnia any day.

Can the iPhone browse the web? It sure can ... and it has a lovely Safari browser on it that gives a great internet experience. But wait, I downloaded the Skyfire Browser to my Omnia and was watching streaming TV shows on it at Hulu.com ... and the quality was amazing!

Can the iPhone play music? Well, of course ... especially since the company that designed it has been producing the #1 MP3 player in the world for years. Now my Omnia can play MP3's too with the included Touch Player, so that's kind of a draw.

But can the iPhone play your music for you while you browse the web? No? Hmm ... too bad. Because I can set my Touch Player to shuffle through my library of music and keep playing it while I open other apps. Then I can start the Opera Browser and open three tabbed pages (it will handle up to 5); one to look up the band that is playing on Wikipedia, one to look up the song lyrics and one to see if the band is appearing in concert nearby anytime soon. And while those are still open and my music is still playing, I can open my Tasks application and set a reminder to buy tickets next payday. And so it goes ....

To bad the remarkable iPhone can't multitask.

BTW, it's good to decide if you want to work with a mechanical keyboard versus a touch screen. But comments about the responsiveness of the Omnia screen would be right ... until you remember how customizable this device is. I got some pointers from this site and tweaked the settings on my phone. Now the screen is much more finely calibrated, I was able to adjust things like the width of the vertical and horizontal scrollbars and installed the Fingerboard keypad. And I'm very satisfied with it.

This might be old news by now, but I see you all complaining about the browser and such. Other than the BB Storm, the other phones are supported by SkyFire. Has anyone tested this out. This will run pretty much anything in this browser. ("We’re the only mobile browser to support all major Web 2.0 standards – Ajax, Javascript, Flash 10 – it just works.")

    Get Skyfire now! | get.skyfire.com

    or better yet.
    Skyfire Download

I'm just jealous that I can't get it for my Storm.
