Hey,
First of all thanks for having me in the forum! I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place but I'm looking for any help or ideas here.
I'm in the US but will leave for England soon. After about 9 months there I'll be off to some African countries, bouncing around for the next few years in Africa, maybe the middle east, and visiting the US occasionally.
I want to get a phone that can travel with me but have no idea about the different SIMs/networks in different countries. If anyone could lead me to some good info or has ideas about phones I'd appreciate the help!
I had a phone for the last two years in Thailand, a simple Sony/Ercsn that could swap SIMs easily, but when I traveled to Nicaragua recently and put in a SIM there it didn't work. This is why I wonder about buying a phone and just switching SIMs in different countries- it didn't work the last time that I tried it.
Before that my phone from Japan wouldn't work anywhere else either.
I saw a phone on CNET called the Duet which can carry 2 SIMs at once. It got me thinking that I could take a good phone abroad, but then I began to wonder about the logistics.
Finally, service. Seeing as I won't be in the US very much, maybe only visiting yearly for xmas, I wonder about keeping my Verizon service here. I probably don't need it and if I kept it would pay crazy roaming charges in different countries just for getting texts or receiving calls. Would there be a way to switch my Veriz number to a pre paid US SIM or something like that?
I was thinking that a GOOGLE number would be a good way to get people to leave voicemails without having to pay to call me in Timbuktu.
Again thanks for pointing out good resources for me to further investigate, or giving me any ideas!
Emmett

Re: Need international phone, help
have you thought about getting a smart phone?
Some newer Blackberry's are world capable, being CDMA and GSM with Sim's cards.
Look at either the Tour or the Storm.

Wait a minute, wait a minute!!! You are stating that you had travel outside the US, swap SIM cards, but don't want to loose your Verizon wireless service??? Dude, it doesn't make sense. Unless I'm misunderstanding the situation, Verizon is a CDMA carrier, their units have no need for a SIM card. And yes, there is one Blacberry that support both, it's called the World phone, I think is the Storm, not sure thought. If it's only to make calls, you know, nothing fancy like a Blackberry smartphone, or HTC, etc... get one of those cheap one IPhone knock off. The Sciphone i68+ can be use as a regular phone and can be use worldwide, it support two SIM cards that can be use at the same time. That is one choice, come with a one year warranty and can also be upgrade. You can get it for around $85.00. Google it and compare some other models so you can make you decision of a known brand cellphone, or a clone.

Re: Need international phone, help
Thanks guys. Clearly I was unclear despite all that I wrote, sorry about that.
No no, no need to keep the Verizon thing going. I'll be back in the US so infrequently that it wouldn't be worth it. I'm just looking for a good quadband, preferably something that could allow Skype use...
Thanks for the tip on the Sciphone. When I googled 'unlocked quad band skype' I got mostly Chinese websites featuring lots of iPhone knockoffs. I'm somewhat skepticle of those, have you had any experience with them?
