Hi
I've nosed around the forums and the Internet in general and I'm still a little bit unclear about the following.
I'm working between Europe and the US this year. I'm using an old Blackberry 8800 in Europe and using a friend's iPhone in the US with individual local SIMs for both (neither under contract).
I'll try and be to the point so as not to bore people with fluffy prose!
I'm looking to buy
- 1 handset for both my SIMs
- works on 3G bands in both Europe and the US
I thought quadband meant I could use a phone to its full capacity everywhere but I think I'm right in saying that unless a phone supports the 2100 band then I won't be able to use 3G on most European carriers (I'm on O2 Ireland). I don't want to spend much money on a handset and then find that I only get EDGE for 2-3 months in Europe.
For example I quite liked the look of the HTC Touch Pro2 on Amazon (international, quad band, 3G EURO) but it lists just 850/900/1800/1900 as bands that it operates on.
Would someone be able to clear that up for me?
And if anyone can recommend a Smartphone available as above and with
- QWERTY keyboard
- WiFi
- Camera
- strong web performance and basic apps (social networking etc)
- touchscreen is not that important
...I would be most grateful.
Thanking you!
Graham

Re: Looking for handset with 3G connection in Europe & US
Ok, this is very similar to my circumstances: I would like a single phone that can use 3G on both the T-Mobile USA and T-Mobile Europe networks. T-Mobile USA phones support 3G on the 1700MHz and 2100MHz bands for upload and download respectively while European networks use only the 2100MHz band for both up and download.
So my Q is whether such a phone (lets say a T-Mobile USA phone) can use the European 3G network. Also, does the 3G on your Bold 2 work in Europe and (it sounds like you're using ATT while in the US) in the US?

Re: Looking for handset with 3G connection in Europe & US
Hi
I can tell you that the Bold 2 does work on 3G in both the US and Europe (specifically, in Ireland). I did have a few problems initially when I got back as I could not get it to work on EDGE in Europe (when 3G unavailable). But I had them suspend my email accounts on AT&T and for some reason it started to work again. Most odd.
As to the first part of your question I can only assume that the T-Mobile version of this particular phone would work as well given the bands it supports. I suppose you could safely select any phone that supports 2100Mhz in the knowledge that it will work.
Hope that helps,
Thanks.
