Based on www.pickwireless.com, Net10 is a service provided by Tracfone. Net10 offers 10c per min. all the time but Tracfone is so much more expensive. What is the reason to buy from Tracfone not Net10?

net10 minutes expire after 30 days unless you purchase a larger card, or unless you recharge your phone then your minutes roll over.

tracfone minutes cost more but gives you 60 days (or more) to use the minutes.

also with tracfone they have some kind of thing where you can purchase a year of service to keep your minutes from expiring, but net10 depends entirely on how much airtime you purchase at a time as to when it expires.

i personally hate tracfone and if i had to do prepaid i would go with www.o2wirelessservice.com because they are reliable and reasonable. i also know their phones work through cingular's network, so their coverage is as good as cingular's. another thing i loved about o2 is they can activate practically any compatible phone, so you dont necessarily have to buy a new one. unfortunately, o2 isnt everywhere so make sure they service your city (unless you dont mind having an out of area phone number haha)

cell phone companies have figured out genius ways of manipulating cell phone plans. its very amazing. While some plans seems like great deals and other seem not as good, don't be fooled by the face value. you should be picking a prepaid service provider based on how well they respond to you when you ask for help. for example t-mobile offers 1000 mins for 100 dollars that expire 1 year from activation. this seems like a great deal, but there are better plans out there. for example Long Distance Post offers a plan with mins that expire 45 days from the start date. this plan is much more cost affective and actually will save you money and provide more minutes then t-mobile over the course of one year.

    I use net10

And it's an extremely great service. I get coverage everywhere - I recently visited my grandmother on a Navajo indian reservation up near Tohatchi, NM (Near Gallup NM). There isn't even supposed to be coverage there, but I get a full 5 bars worth.

Also, it really IS 10 cents per minute. I get a kick out of making long-distance calls, just because I can and it won't cost anymore than about 30 cents for 3 minutes worth of nonsense.

AND the airtime minutes do not expire after 30 days. They expire after 60. You buy 30 dollars worth of minute (28.88 @ Walmart) and you get 300 minutes for 60 days.

I'm trying to change services to a contract plan - because I'm going to need family minutes this year. But it took me about 5 months to decide to switch over from net10 and I still have moments where I wonder if I shouldn't just keep my service.

The only qualms I would say I have with net10 is that the ringtones are not yet available with their services. They ARE however "coming soon" and there's a link made for it on their website, so I have hope. But otherwise, it's pretty sweet and simple.

Tracfone seems like such a joke to me. (And yes I did have a regular standard Tracfone at one point.)

that is correct, i didn't find out until after my last post Net10 went from 30 days to 60 days on the airtime expiration in july 2005. i think they sound like a pretty good deal as far as prepaids go.

as far as the whole "being one company but having two different rates" goes... tracfone/net10 is like another prepaid company i know of that's like that. locus/oxygen/callplus is a company i have some experience with and i never figured out why they had the same service with three different rates.

    go figure

    from what i understand:

    net10 is gsm
    tracfone is cdma

in sw wisconsin, for example, there is no gsm coverage. tracfones work great here, if you don't want a contract. my family uses 3 of them, and they have no complaints.

it all depends on your situation.

Yeah, I have Verizon, but my friend has tracfone, and I am VERY VERY impressed.

Also, isn't Tracfone provided by Verizon? lol, I think it goes down a whole line, lol

it's operated by América Móvil, a mexican wireless company that expanded into N. America.

tracfone's website states that they utilize america's leading cell providers.

interesting link here though. it's the coverage maps. notice that they can change depending on your tracfone model...

I have used many different prepaid phone companies. Net 10 is the best if all you're looking for is minutes. 10 cents all the time and free long distance. They don't have any other really great features but if you can't (or don't want to) go with a contract, they're the best. For my area anyway.

If anybody know a prepaid service with better minutes prices for indy area, please let me know.

Tracfone varies from location to location as to the carrier use -GSM-Cingular, CDMA-Verizon and TDMA-Cingular/AT&T(?). You can use the Tracfone web page for your zipcode and phonescoop.com to determine the protocol for your desired phone. You will find some phone models that came in more than one format-- V60s and V120s-- are much harder to determine the underlying carrier.

The same applies to NET10 owned by Tracfone. They contract with different carriers to supply service. Here in Southern California, Net10 uses Cingular.

Check with clarkhoward.com: Save more, spend less and avoid ripoffs , I know he sugests NET10 as the cheapest, but there may be others listed you can use.

Before you go prepaid, decide exactly what your requirements are. Messeging is flat rate per day with some, and per message with others. If you don't message much AND you don't use a lot of minutes, compare the flat .10 a minute with a plan with prepaid minutes or a company with a plan.

Does Net10 charge for incoming texts? I know some Tracfones don't and some do, but what about Net10? Their website doesn't seem to specify...

yes, NET10 charge you if you receive a text. 0.5minute a text.
If I don't have my t-mobile, I would prefer using NET10 for my primary only because it's 10cents/min. I used to use NET10 for sending and receiving txt to and from international. It's only 5 cents receive/send. A lot cheaper than if I send it with my t-mobile cell.

But then since I don't want to buy the card every 60 days, I switch to trafone and I add the double minute card so I only have to spend 20bucks every 90 days. and I get 120 minutes instead of 60. Great deal.

Both NET10 and tracfone have a great coverage, I went to visit my brother in law in up state NY where it's kinda out of nowehere, my t-mobile roaming while I can still use my tracfone
