Can I get connected with wireless hotspots without a data package?

Hi,

The HTC Freestyle doesn't require a data plan but has a full html browser. I don't want to buy a data plan since I usually have my laptop with me if I need it. However, it would be nice to have the option to use it. Can this be done? I tried looking through existing threads but those reference phones that DO require a data package.
Any input would be appreciated.

with that, you can only browse through Wi-fi. but if you plan to use it as an alternative, i think you really have to get a data plan, but i think there are customizable data plans. Check that out with your carrier.
