With all the hype currently surrounding Apple, Sony and Samsung, one brand that seems to have been forgotten is good old HTC. Thats why, today, Im going to stray off the beaten path and take a look at a couple of smart phones that people seem to have forgotten. Yes, the low mega pixel count on the camera is a major problem with HTC, I agree, but that doesnt mean the rest of the smart phone is worthless. Here, Im going to compare the HTC One with its small brother, the HTC One Mini. What Im trying to find here is the difference between both the smart phones. Is there any? Read on to find out...
Size and weight
As far as size is concerned, the HTC One Mini is smaller, but not that much. It measures 132 x 63.2 x 9.25 mm while the HTC One measures 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3 mm. In terms of weight, the HTC One Mini weighs 122 g while the HTC One weighs 143 g. There isnt too much of a difference here and Im sure no one would say that either of these smart phones has not utilized their size and weight to a maximum. But in all fairness, if the HTC One is going to get points for a larger screen, the HTC One Mini should be awarded this point for being more compact and lighter.
Therefore, this point goes to the HTC One Mini.

Display
As far as the display is concerned, the HTC One is far superior to the HTC One Mini, not only in size, but in technology as well. While the HTC One comes with a 4.7 S-LCD 3 touch screen that has an industry leading pixel density of 468 ppi, the HTC One Mini comes with a 4.3 S-LCD 2 touch screen which has a pixel density of just 341 ppi. I cant complain about this though. If you dont make the Mini inferior, why would anyone want to buy the HTC One?
This point goes to the HTC One.

Memory & Storage
In terms of memory, the HTC One Mini is literally half the smart phone the HTC One is. It comes with just 1 GB of RAM while the HTC One has 2 GB. So you can expect a significantly faster response from the HTC One. One point which I will have to hold against both these smart phones is the fact that neither offer expandable storage options. In todays world of smart phones, expandable storage is a major requirement for any smart phone. Apple has managed to get away without it simply because theyre Apple. But everyone else needs it and you will find the Nokia Lumia series suffers a lot due to the lack of expandable storage options. The HTC One comes with either 32 or 64 GB of internal memory while the HTC One Mini comes with just 16 GB of internal memory. Utterly disappointing.
Still, this point will go to the HTC One for its superior RAM and storage capabilities.

Camera
Like I mentioned right in the beginning of this comparison, there is absolutely no way in which you can consider either of these smart phones worthy of competing with the big boys in terms of camera. Both smart phones come with a disgraceful 4 MP camera and LED flash. Come on boys, Im sure you can find it in you to at least fit in an 8 MP shooter. On the plus side, both smart phones do support video recording at full HD. One noteworthy point in favor of the HTC One though, it comes with optical image stabilization. That makes it all the more difficult to understand why the HTC One has just a 4 MP camera.
Anyway, it still manages to pick up this point but because of optical image stabilization and nothing else.
(HTC One - Three / HTC One Mini - One)
OS & Performance
Both smart phones come with Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean) and also get the benefit of HTCs unique Sense user interface. No difference there. There is a difference between both smart phones in terms of hardware though. While the HTC One comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 APQ8064T chip and quad core, 1700 MHz, Krait 300 processor, the HTC One Mini comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip and dual core, 1400 MHz, Krait processor. As far as graphics is concerned, the HTC One has an Adreno 320 processor while the HTC One Mini has an Adreno 305 processor. In my opinion, the hardware on both these smart phones is exactly what a top end smart phone and its little brother would have.
Still, the HTC One picks up this point for superior hardware.
(HTC One - Four / HTC One Mini - One)
Battery
While the HTC One Mini has the smaller 1,800 mAh battery, the HTC One has a 2,300 mAh battery. But whats interesting here is that both smart phones offer a standby time of a little over 20 days.
There definitely isnt enough in this point to award it to either smart phone and thats why its a draw.
(HTC One - Four / HTC One Mini - One)
Price
You can pick up the HTC One Mini for around $ 522 (free of contract) while the HTC One costs a lot more at $ 679 (free of contract) for its 32 GB variant. Now, the HTC One may be better than the HTC One Mini in many ways, but I see absolutely no reason for anyone to want to pay an extra $150+ for what is, essentially, the same smart phone.
This point goes to the HTC One Mini.
(HTC One - Four / HTC One Mini - Two)
Conclusion
The final score reads 4 points to 2 in favor of the HTC One. Is it enough? I think HTC has done a terrific job with both of these smart phones in terms of technology. I dont think any other smart phone manufacturer has managed to even come close to such a brilliant balance between a flagship smart phone and its mini version. Kudos to HTC.
