WARNING! When you master reset your phone, all your personal data stored on the phone’s internal memory will be deleted, including downloaded content, media files and ringtones, applications, contacts etc. Furthermore, all settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: Data stored on the SD and SIM cards will not be affected. Before the reset, you can visit this thread for a guide on how to back up data, or this thread for instructions on restoring data. You can also check this thread for details on how to back up and restore data locally or via HTC Backup.

Master Reset via Settings:

  1. Open the apps drawer on the home screen
  2. Launch “Settings”
  3. Scroll to “Personal” and tap “backup & reset”
  4. Enable or disable “Back up my data” and “Automatic restore”
  5. Tap “Reset phone”
  6. If your phone is protected by a lock screen, enter the necessary password / PIN / pattern to proceed
  7. Optionally, select whether to “Erase SD card” too. WARNING – by enabling this option, all data on the SD card will be deleted during the reset process
  8. At the “Warning” pop-up, tap “OK”
  9. Tap “OK” a second time to confirm and reset your phone

Factory Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: In case your phone freezes, crashes, or otherwise doesn’t allow you to reset it from the settings menu, alternatively you can try resetting the phone from the System Recovery menu, which can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses.

  1. Turn off the phone
  2. Press and hold “Volume down”, then press & hold “Power”
  3. After the phone vibrates, release the “Power” key
  4. After you gain access to “hTC download mode”, release “Volume down”
  5. From hTC download mode, press “Volume down” repeatedly to highlight “Reboot to bootloader”
  6. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  7. Press “Volume down” to highlight “Boot to recovery mode” and press “Power”
  8. At the exclamation mark, press and hold “Power”, then press & release “Volume Up”
  9. After you gain access to “Android System Recovery”, release all hardware keys
  10. In the Recovery menu, press “Volume down” repeatedly to highlight “wipe data / factory reset”
  11. Press “Power”
  12. After the phone resets, “Reboot system now” will be highlighted
  13. Press “Power” to select the option and wait for the phone to reboot

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: After a fresh factory reset, it’s recommended to check if new software updates are available for download. To do this:

  1. Open the apps drawer on the home screen
  2. Open “Settings”
  3. Scroll to “Phone” and tap “About”
  4. Tap “Software information”
  5. Check of a new OS version is available for download. If so, follow the on-screen prompts to download and apply it
