WARNING! When you factory reset your phone, all your personal data located on the phone’s internal memory will be deleted. This includes downloaded content, contacts, ringtones, media files, apps etc. In addition, settings will be restored to factory values, however data stored on the SD and SIM cards will not be affected.

NOTE: Before you factory reset your phone, you can visit this thread for instructions on how to back up data, and this thread on a guide to restore data.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Launch “Settings”
  2. Scroll to “Personal” and tap “Backup & reset”
  3. Enable or disable “Automatic Restore” and “Back up my data”
  4. Tap “Reset phone”
  5. If your phone is protected by a lock screen / PIN / password etc. enter it to proceed
  6. Optionally, choose whether to “Erase SD Card” too (WARNING by enabling this option all data on the SD card will be deleted during the factory reset)
  7. Tap “OK” to confirm

Factory Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: In case your phone freezes, crashes, or otherwise prevents you from resetting it via Settings, you can try resetting the phone from the Android System Recovery menu, which can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses.

  1. Make sure the phone is powered OFF
  2. Press and hold “Power” and “Volume down” at the same time
  3. Once the phone vibrates, release “Power”
  4. At the “hTC download menu”, release “volume down” too
  5. Press “volume down” repeatedly to navigate the menu and highlight “Reboot to bootloader”
  6. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  7. Press “Volume down” to highlight “Boot to Recovery mode” and press “Power”
  8. Once you gain access to the “No Command” screen, press and hold “Power” then tap “Volume down”
  9. Release “Power” once in the Android Recovery menu
  10. In Recovery, press “volume down” repeatedly to navigate to and highlight “wipe data / factory reset”
  11. Press “Power” to confirm
  12. Highlight “Yes – delete all user data” and press “Power”
  13. Wait for the phone to reset. Once done, highlight “Reboot system now” and press “Power”

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: After you have reset your phone, it’s recommended to keep the OS up to date at all times. To do this:

  1. Open the apps drawer
  2. Launch “Settings”
  3. Scroll to and tap “About”
  4. Tap “Software information”
  5. Check if a new update is available. If applicable, follow the on-screen prompts to download and apply available updates (NOTE: the update process will require at least one reboot)
