Yeah, not a good thing. Of course it was an accident. Here's my story from what I can remember. It's a bit long but worth it if this happens to you.
Dropped in a lake at the cottage in about two feet of water for about 5 seconds (by the time I realized what I'd done, freaking out, getting in the water to retrieve it, etc). It was still on so I shut it off. Then curiosity got the better of me, I tried to power it up. No go. I immediately removed the battery and started shaking the water out (and it slipped and I threw it back into the lake, no just kidding, but I should have moved off the dock to do this , note to self). It was sunny so I laid both pieces on the dock, standing up facing the sun.
We were back home about 3 hours later. I tested the battery for voltage and it tested 1.35 vdc (which is low because I knew the battery was full charge, should have been above 3 vdc). Got on the net to try and find out what to do. I read about the rice thing, which I knew but didn't think about it. I took apart the phone by removing the 6 small screws, removed the back plate. I slid open the keyboard and buried the phone and battery in the rice for about 12 hours. Re-tested the battery and still below 2 volts (with a full charge, it should be above 3.0 vdc, I then attached the battery to the phone with an elastic and inserted the ac charger. The green charging lights came on but the battery icon had a question mark on it. Ok, that may be a good thing. Removed the charger and buried both pieces back in the rice for 24 hours. I must add that the screen had signs of water damage (cloudy and spotty on the inside), I thought this phone was toast.
After this 24 hours, I tested the battery for voltage and still below 2. I connected the ac charger to it again, the green lights lit up and now the battery had no question mark on it, COOL!! I tried powering it up and it did, yahoo. The battery showed full charge. I tried unplugging the ac charger, the phone shut off. the screen however was showing less spots than previously.
Then I started thinking that maybe the battery is still damp inside, not putting out enough voltage. I let it charge for about 8 hours, even though it should full charge. Back into the rice the two pieces went again for another 24 hours.

Here we go. Tested the battery, Tested 4.1 volts!!!. Put the battery up to the phone contacts holding it with an elastic and powered up. Yeah, phone works with battery, screen still a bit cloudy. Tried calling my land line and the phone rang.
Put both pieces back into the rice, going to keep it there until the screen dries out completely, if I can.
So this my story as I remember it but if I had found this story, I would know that there is hope. I can't say how long this phone will work as this all happened in the past 3 days. Sorry for the rambling but I like to give as many details as I can. If it happened again, I'd probably leave both pieces in the rice for 72 hours before doing anything.

Note: This cell phone is not my primary phone so I was able to do without it for whatever the time it took to try and get it going. I realize that a lot of you will not be able to wait this long.
I cannot enter my phone info because I'm in Canada with Bell and this provider is not on the site's list. Maybe the site could update their provider list to accommodate their Canadian friends?

I should have explained something that perhaps some of you are not aware of . Uncooked rice can be used as a desiccant (a moisture remover) in some instances, much like the small packs of silica get included in most electronic packaging.
