"Emergency Use Only"

i just purchased a Razr on eBay. Supposedly, the phone is unlocked but when i put my simm in, the phone displays "Emergency Use Only", and is unable to make or recieve calls. i did a search on here, and not many people have had this problem without an "enter subsidy code" message, and i was unable to find a solution to this problem. has anyone run into this before?

Also, what is the standard password for the "Master Reset" function? i would like to try that before i pay the 20 bucks to try yo have it unlocked again.

standard master reset codes are usually one of the following:

Sounds like your handset is still locked.

the phone reads the simm card and everything, master reset did nothing. i can't seem to find one person at any retailer that knows what they, or i, am talking about.

try using a different sim card that you know for sure is working and see if you get the same message, if it works fine then you know your other sim card is defective.

It's acting like it's accepting your SIM - it just can't find a network that the SIM can use. Are you sure the SIM works in other phones in the same location?

also make sure that under "network settings" your phone is set to "automatic" and not 900/800

i don't see why it wouldn't. it worked fine in the last two phones it was in, both razr. the last phone had salad dressing spilled on it, and the screen went black. i don't see how this would damage the sim, but maybe?

changing the band off automatic removes the "Emergency Use only" message, but presents "No Service", and will not list any available networks (not 100% sure on this, talked through it over the phone with fiancee).

What would cause a problem with the simm? i don't have another gsm phone to test the sim, but as i said before, it worked about a week ago in a phone that is now inoperative.

my fiancee gave it in to have it unlocked again, but i'll keep checking back here and keep those who posted updated. thank you all for your help.

ok so that did get rid of the "emergency calls" message....


can you tell me what frequency bands show on your phone under "network settings" ?

i'm not sure what bands it shows, my wife gave the phone to some guy to try to fix, but t-mobile said that the old simm card is not compatible with the new RAZR. the new one has video and bluetooth wheras the old one does not. i don't see why this would bar the use of a slightly older simm from a few months ago, but who knows?

Geez, where do they find these customer service reps, was this at a T-Mobile corporate store or one those kiosk at a Mall??
that is totally false.

yeah, it was at one of those kiosk things, and i def thought it was bs.

anyway, it turns out the phone was locked to cingular, and the guy she gave it to was unable to unlock it. i don't know what the hell is going on with the thing, but i think i'm going to send it back to the guy i bought it from.

supposing a phone is locked, what is it that happens when a forgeign sim card is placed into it, or how do i know it is indeed locked?

I now have the same problem with an EBay Razr. 45 days of OK use and now it is in an "Emergency Use Only" mode (Cellular One/ATT). Tried a different SIM card and get the same thing. What's with this?
