Well, I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to cell phones, so I'm hoping you guys can answer my questions. Pretty much, the L6 I got was off of eBay, and now that I actually have it, I'm pretty sure it isn't a US version of the phone. When I insert a SIM card into the phone, there is always an Icon at the top of the display now that depicts a little green phone with a "1" next to it. In the manual, this icon is listed as an Active Line display. What does this mean besides the obvious? I understand it means the line is active, but I'm wondering if the line is always on when that icon is displayed. By on, I mean like making a call. I don't want to get some super huge bill because I didn't pay attention to that icon.

I also have a few other questions if you guys have the time:

1 - If you buy new, unlocked phones on eBay, are they pretty much all guaranteed to be phones that aren't from the US?

2 - My sister got a new SLVR 7, and our old AT&T SIM cards won't work with it, but we've put in a friends Cingular SIM card and the phone worked. Does Cingular replace SIM cards? (I tried to call to find out, but the rep hung up on me)

3 - The SLVR L6 doesn't have great signal, and I'm already having thoughts of getting another phone. Can someone recommend a place online or not online to get a good, unlocked cell phone from the US? And, you know those cell phone places all over that just sell phones? Can you purchase JUST THE CELL PHONE from those places? Or anywhere that isn't online for that matter? The reason I'm asking is because I don't want to go to Cingular or T-Mobile to get a phone, because I don't want to renew my contract.

Thanks in advance if anyone answers my questions, and sorry to take up your time.

Re: A few questions regarding a new unlocked SLVR6.

1st question - yes alot of unlocked phones can come from other places not just the US (China, Korea, US, Europe, etc...)

2nd question - When you purchased the phone did you check if it was compatible with your service provider (seller adds a service provider link)

3rd question - To my knowledge you don't have to renew your contract with them, you can purchase a phone only but it will be quite expensive since ur only buying the phone.

I bought my slvr on ebay and sell my phones on there as well, If you really pay attention to the add most the time you can tell where the phone came from, most people sell phones because theve upgraded and dont need the phone that they got or are selling there old phone, if the seller has a boat load of phones for sale... well thats how they got over here, on a boat.

Re: A few questions regarding a new unlocked SLVR6.

Always ask questions to the seller. It doesn't matter if it's an inconvenience to them because neither you, or them, would want to really deal with a return/refund issue.

    1. Unlocked phones...some of the phones are geared for the US, others for overseas. Remember, all phones are essentially unlocked when it leaves the manufacturer. The time when a phone is locked is when it is with a provider. In a way like a packaged deal...you get the phone (cheaper than retail price) with a plan. If you're going to buy a phone off ebay, always ask questions.

    2. Some people get confused and think since the merger, a Cingular phone will work with a ATTWS sim card (and the other way around). You need to get the phone unlocked. It's just that simple...no big issue. If you don't know how to do it, you can easily find someone who can unlock your phone from $10 - $20.

    3. You can check anywhere online for vendors, just take a look at their reputation. Other than that, you can try Craigslist. It's a site where you can place and respond to ads . Great thing about it is that it stresses on local transactions only, so you'll be less likely to be scammed because you're meeting with the person. Also, you don't have to renew your contract if you go to a Cingular or T-Mobile store if you want to buy a new phone, they'll sell you a phone. The only thing is that it wil be at full retail price.

And not all sellers on eBay who sell a ton of phones get them from overseas. Some of the sellers sell refurbished or phones-for-parts.
