HELP! I don';t understand the SMS function/feature of Nextel.

I have the Full Service NOL Package with a i95 phone.

Every month I get charged for doing this.

I have called Nextel several times, and they credit my account and tell me that I should be billed for this.

It just happened again and the rep told me that there is a difference between text messaging and SMS.

The rep says that the charge occurs: 1) when someone sends me a text message for a computer.

This rarely, if ever occurs and no where near the 220 times it say it occurs last month.

What is SMS? And why I am being charged for this

SMS is the Short Message System ... a paging system that is part of the Voice Mail system (the SMS is what notifies you that you have a voicemail)

Nextel will not charge you for the messages that you receive from the voicemail system, but the default charge for messages received from anywhere else is 0.15 per message. You can only receive messages through the SMS system, not reply to them.

The Full Service package for $15.00 + tax should include unlimited free 2way messaging which goes through the internet service instead of the voicemail/paging system. Normally messages sent to your phone number should automatically re-route through the 2way message service instead of the SMS one ... you may want to make sure that you are not having people send messages to [your phone number]@page.nextel.com. They need to send the message to either your phone number (if from another cell phone) or to [your phone number]@messaging.nextel.com (if from a computer)

That should resolve the issue ... if not have customer service send a billing ticket on it or talk to tech support and they should be able to determine what is causing the problem and fix it.
