The release of the Nokia Lumia 920 didn’t really turn many heads. I’m glad that Nokia realized this almost immediately though. In just a few months, the Lumia 920 was replaced as the flagship model by the Nokia Lumia 928 and the Nokia Lumia 925 was introduced within a week. But is there a method to this madness? Is there a difference between all of these phones? The best way to start off this debate would be to compare the Nokia Lumia 925 and the Nokia Lumia 928.

    Size and weight

If you placed both these smart phones side by side you could easily get confused. There isn’t much to differentiate both these phones. The Lumia 928 measures 133 x 68.9 x 10.1 mm which is slightly more than the Lumia 925 which measures 129 x 70.6 x 8.5 mm. Honestly, no one could really tell the difference. At least Nokia put some effort to differentiate both phones in terms of weight. The Lumia 928 is much heavier than the Lumia 925 at 162 g. This is 23 g more than the Lumia 925.

Looks like the Lumia 925 just about manages to pick up this point being much lighter and fractionally smaller than the Lumia 928.

    Display

There is nothing to separate both these phones in the display department. Both phones have 4.5 inch AMOLED screens that provide a screen resolution of 1,280 x 768 pixels. The Lumia 925 has a pixel density of 334 ppi which is slightly higher than the 332 ppi of the Lumia 928.

It would be unfair to award this point to the Lumia 925 because of a lousy 2 ppi difference won’t it? It’s a draw.

    Memory & Storage

Once again, the developers at Nokia really haven’t put much though into this point either. Both phones have the same 1 GB of RAM to work with but while the Lumia 928 offers 32 GB of storage space, the Lumia 925 offers just 16 GB. This honestly is the first real difference I have noticed between both these smart phones. We finally have something more than a bigger number (928>925) to prove which phone is the flagship model. But trust me, it's going to take a lot more than just more storage. And considering Nokia still doesn’t allow expandable memory in their smart phones, I’d say they are still in the dark ages as far as storage is concerned.

This point goes to the Lumia 928 simply because it offers double the storage as the Lumia 925 offers.

    Camera

Finally a little respite for the Lumia 928. It isn’t much, but it’s something. The Lumia 928 has an 8.7 MP camera which is exactly the same as the 8.7 MP camera on the Lumia 925. What’s the difference then? The difference is in the flash. The Lumia 928 has a Xenon flash (which I remember from out Nokia N8 days. It really was awesome). There is nothing that a dual LED flash can do to compete with Xenon. This is something worth talking about. Although it didn’t really deserve a whole new phone all by itself. I certainly hope there is something more to differentiate these phones.

The point goes to the Lumia 928. Just because it has a Xenon flash. That’s awesome.

    OS & Performance

Both phones run on the latest Microsoft software, Windows Phone 8. That means there isn’t a single difference you can find between the software on both the phones. If you think you are paying more for better software, think again. In terms of performance as well, both phones are exactly the same. Both have a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 system chip and a Dual core 1500 MHz Krait processor. What’s more, both phones have an Adreno 225 graphics processor as well. In terms of functionality, you could say they were the exact same phone.

It was never easier for me to consider a point tied.

    Battery

Once again, it seems Nokia failed to grasp the concept of releasing different versions of a smartphone. Both smart phones have a 2,000 mAh battery. But for some funny reason the battery offers different stand by times on both phones. You can expect a stand by time of 25 days with the Lumia 928 while the Lumia 925 is supposed to have a stand by time of just 18 days. That’s a whole week extra. How did you manage to do that Nokia?

The Lumia 928 gets the point simply because I am bamboozled.

    Price

The Lumia 928 can be picked up for just $ 539.99. That is a lot lesser than some of its competitors isn’t it? What’s strange though is that the Lumia 925 is priced at more than $ 700. Wow! That’s even more than the Samsung Galaxy S4. I hope I’m wrong, but if I’m not, one thing is for certain. You would really have to be a diehard Nokia fan to buy the Lumia 925. I mean who is going to pay $ 700+ for a phone that is just like the Lumia 920 and Lumia 928 but costs a lot more? Definitely not me.

I never saw this one coming. The point goes to the Lumia 928.

    Conclusion

Even though I absolutely love the new look of the Lumia 925 I don’t think it is going to convince me to shell out that much cash. In all honesty, I think Nokia really messed up here. They could have combined components from the Lumia 920, Lumia 925 and Lumia 928 and could have had a smart phone which competed for the number one spot. Instead, all they have are three above average smart phones with little to differentiate between them. While the Lumia 928 did manage to win this comparison four to one, apart from the flash, there isn’t anything that caught my eye. I almost forgot to mention the speaker on the Lumia 925. I can't believe I almost left it out. The speaker is supposed to be the loudest among smart phones. So if you are one of those music loving types, maybe the Lumia 925 is the phone for you...
