what is SMS!

i have been reading up on this on the internet and i cant find out what it exactly is! plzz explain in english no technical words! what is it? what can it offer me? is there a site that i could send them free? and i also heard that u could send mono ringtones and rtttl codes to ur phone and use them as a ringer! if so tell me step by step how u would send it to a nokia 3395! thanx!

SMS Stand for Short Message Service and is a phone technology that lets you send up to 160 characters of text from one phone to another. Together with a WAP or GPRS links (a type of mobile internet access) you can recieve download linka via sms to download ringtones or games. in basic terms SMS = text

You also get SMS Push technology which enables you to opt in for ads, video etc and to download certain ringtones.

It's so strange..
my teacher told me that SMS stood for simple main system.
but everyone else says Short Message Service.. but that sounds better, so i guess my teacher is wrong in this one
