I know this has probably been asked a million times, but, I have a non-Nokia USB Data cable I can't get installed on my PC. Phone is a 3120, PC runs XP, have installed Nokia PC Suite and Nokia cable drivers, and cable driver that came with the cable. I have read about the USB to Serial converter could this be my problem and if so does anyone know of a good site to download it from.
Thanks

Last night I checked my com settings and my USB cable is crossing over to my com4 port so I set my connection on Nokia PC Suite to com4 and it still would not recognize my phone. When I plug my phone in, 3120, a "Not Charging" message shows up on the phone screen but my PC doesn't act like anything has been connected. I did notice that my drivers are not digitally signed which I don't know if that makes a difference or not but any help would be great.
Thanks Again

I too have a cheapo cable coming for my 3120. Remember com ports are these really scary shared devices. There ar 4 comports, 1 and 3 , 2 and 4. If your trying to use 4 and its dead it maybe cause somethings on 2. Like a modem if your dialup. If no modem is in use and lets say you dont have a ups unit runing on your machine thru a serial/comport, they maybe turned off. If winblows says they are there then maybe there on. Its been known to lie yeah know. You can check your ports and base addys in your bios on good machine. I gen. keep them turned off in bios. Also load the drivers without the cable attached.

Was this issue ever resolved? I'm experiencing the same problem as Stanley. I installed the USB driver before plugging in the cord. When the WinXP wizard runs it mentions that it cannot find the necessary software. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

ya, make sure you have all the software and drivers installed. Newer phones will have the automatic install but the older ones are kinda tricky sometimes. I used to have that phone and I noticed that playing around with the connection mgr sometimes will help too. Also double check your PC Suite version. Let us know how it turns out!

Ok, assuming that this is an ebay cable, it's not a true USB cable. Sure, it plugs into USB, but really it is a USB to Serial cable with a phone interface on the other end. I will also assume that you installed the software (that came with it) correctly. Try this. Go into Device Manager with the cable unplugged from the computer. Look at the "ports" section. You should see something like COM1, COM3, and LPT1. Now plug the cable in. You should have COM5 show up. The cable emulates an additional COM port to the computer. Assuming this all happened, (I sure do assume a lot) go into your software package (I recommend MobiMB or BitPM) and set it up to interface on COM5. You can't tell the software that you are using a USB cable, because while you think that you are, it's not a true USB cable, it's more like a serial adapter that plugs into USB.

Re: 3120 USB Data Cable Trouble
Did you make sure all the drivers and software installed?
I'm wondering how if you ever revisited the problem even though you got a new phone.Jimmy Kelley
